Foundation announces $133,000 in scholarships

The Foundation for Roanoke Valley awarded more than $133,000 in educational scholarships during its first scholarship reception at Jefferson Center's Fitzpatrick Hall.
The foundation administers 49 endowed scholarship funds and received more than 600 applications for scholarships ranging from $250 to $12,000. Recipients were selected on a competitive basis using criteria established by donors at the creation of the scholarship endowment fund.
The foundation also awarded its first Holland Scholarship, a minimum award of $10,000 that will be given annually to an outstanding graduating senior from the Roanoke Valley who shows exceptional promise in his or her future college career.
Ryan Brock, a 2009 Northside High School graduate, is the first recipient. Brock will use the scholarship at Virginia Tech, where he will pursue a degree in architecture.

William Byrd High School graduate John Lukas Overstreet received the 2009 Dr. Charlie J. (Jay) Lovelace III Memorial College Scholarship.
The annual $1,000 scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of Jay Lovelace, son of Charlie and Carolee Lovelace of Roanoke County. The younger Lovelace died as the result of an automobile accident.
The scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior who is a member of Vinton Baptist Church and who will be attending a four-year college or university.
Overstreet was recognized for academic achievements and service to school, community, church and family. He will attend Carson-Newman College.
