Justin Philip Ausborn, a 2007 Hidden Valley High School graduate, has received one of two $1,250 Chesty Puller Scholarship Awards at Virginia Military Institute.

He also received a cash award of $300 from the mechanical engineering department for the highest grade-point average in his class.

Ausborn will be a battalion sergeant major for the VMI Corps of Cadets. He is the son of Susan Ausborn of Roanoke and Jeffrey Ausborn of Jacksonville, N.C., and grandson of Robert and Kay Schmeding of Smith Mountain Lake.

The Roanoke Elks Lodge recognized valedictorians from 18 Roanoke-area high schools for their academic achievement and awarded five scholarships.

The lodge presented $500 scholarships to Briana Dobbs and Carson Smith of Patrick Henry High School, Tim Row of Hidden Valley High School and Leah Taylor of William Fleming.

Craig Tripp of William Byrd High School received a scholarship for $1,000 a year for four years from the national Elks organization.

Andrew Maczugowski, a Cave Spring Middle School student, was honored during a May 23 statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.

Andrew was invited to the ceremony because of his performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to second- through eighth-grade Talent Search Program participants.

Two Virginia Tech alumni have been recognized by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for their postgraduate achievements.

Amy Alber of Forest and Brian Doyle of Roanoke are recipients of the Outstanding Recent Alumni Awards.

Alber received her Bachelor of Science degree in biological systems engineering in 2001. She is a warehouse business unit leader for Frito-Lay Inc.

Doyle received his associate of agriculture in agricultural technology degree in 2002. He is a lawn maintenance manager for Valley Landscaping.

Autumn Watson, a Franklin County High School graduate, is one of 27 scholars recognized as students of the year during a banquet by Virginia Tech's Educational Talent Search program.

ETS counselors work with students to help them improve their grades, cultivate academic interests and plan for college. Students participate in activities such as monthly meetings at school, Saturday sessions at Tech and visits to colleges.
