Army National Guard Spec. Thepsimuong Anouxa of Roanoke has returned from deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Anouxa, a 2004 graduate of William Fleming High School, is a light-wheel vehicle mechanic and has four years of military service. He is assigned to the 444th Adjutant General Company Human Resources Company, based in Pittsburgh.

Seaman Joshua Atkinson, a 2008 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, recently completed Navy basic training and was meritoriously promoted to his current rank at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Atkinson is the son of Leslie Arm of Roanoke and Douglas Atkinson of Blue Ridge.

John Guill of Daleville has been deployed to Afghanistan.
A member of the 4th Infantry Division, Guill was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo.
He is the son of Tommy and Donna Guill of Daleville and a 2002 graduate of James River High School.

The 40-member Virginia Gentlemen barbershop chorus took the top prize in the AAA Plateau and second overall for all choruses in the Mid-Atlantic Southern Division competition May 23 in Reston.
The group also won the "most improved chorus" award and was invited to participate in the "Show of Champions" where the top choruses and quartets performed.
"In my 40 years as a member of the Virginia Gentlemen, this was my first opportunity to sing in the 'Show of Champions,' " member Bill Clark said.
Clark said the successful singing of "If All My Dreams were Made of Gold" and "Five Foot Two" was a special tribute to director Erin Odell, who will leave the group in the fall to pursue a master's degree at the University of Missouri.

Chelsea Austin of Henry is the recipient of one of the four national scholarships from the National Association of Railway Business Women for the second year.
Austin received her $2,000 scholarship during the 65th national convention of the association in mid-May. The Roanoke chapter of the association sponsored Austin, a graduate of Franklin County High School.
Austin is a graduate of Ferrum College. She majored in psychology and criminal justice and plans to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology.
She is the daughter of Donna Cannaday of Henry and granddaughter of Melvin and Virginia Austin of Roanoke.

Amber Altice, Ryan Brock, Kahia Jones and Jonathan Walker are recipients of continuing education scholarships from the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce and the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
Altice is a graduating senior at William Byrd High School, where she has been active on the varsity softball team, the Beta Club and Leo Club. She also volunteered for the Salvation Army and the American Cancer Society. She will attend Virginia Tech.
Brock is graduating from Northside High School, where he is active in the Technology Student Association, Burton Robotics Team, SkillsUSA and the National Honor Society. He volunteers with Burlington Elementary School, Friendship Manor and the Rescue Mission. He also will attend Virginia Tech.
Jones is a Northside High School graduating senior and has been active in basketball, track, cross country and Skills- USA. She volunteers with the American Cancer Society and CHIP. She hasn't decided where she will attend college.
Walker is a graduating senior at Salem High School, where he is captain of the football team, president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Spanish Honor Society. He also has coached little league football and junior basketball. He plans to attend Virginia Tech.
The scholarships are funded by sponsors and participants of the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament and other fundraisers. For information, call the chamber office at 387-0267.
