Health Focus of Southwest Virginia awarded more than $169,500 in scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year to students pursuing education in medical professions.

The Roanoke-based nonprofit organization gives financial awards based primarily on financial need and potential for completing a health career program.

Health Focus is accepting applications for scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. The application deadline is May 15. For more information and applications, visit www.healthfocusswva.org.

Roanoke Valley students at the following higher educational institutions earned scholarships:

Matthew Ryan Hubbard, John Pendleton and Stephen Donald Berry, Roanoke Valley seniors at Hampden-Sydney College, have been inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society.

Hubbard, a political science and history major, is the son of Johnnie and Pamela Hubbard of Roanoke County. He recently was initiated into the national honor society Phi Beta Kappa and is a member of the history honor society Phi Alpha Theta.

Pendleton is chairman of the Student Senate and the student capital campaign, and is president of the social fraternity Sigma Nu. A political science major, he is the son of Jill and John Pendleton of Roanoke.

Berry, a Patrick Henry Scholar, is president of the Outsider's Club, a columnist for the student newspaper and a disc jockey. An English and economics major, Berry is son of Gene and Carolee Berry of Roanoke County.
