Kevin Carlin, a junior at Jefferson Forest High School and the Central Virginia Governor's School, will participate in the 2009 Naval Academy Summer Seminar program.

The six-day program is for high achievers who are completing their junior year of high school and are interested in attending the academy.

Carlin is one of about 2,200 students selected for the August program.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Jefferson Forest Cavaliers varsity baseball team and is the son of Kevin and Nora Carlin.

Sgt. Garrett Christley has returned to reserve status after a year's deployment with the Army National Guard in Afghanistan.

He was deployed with the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion as part of the Utah National Guard. His job in Afghanistan primarily was to interact with the locals, Christley said.

Christley is working part time with UPS until the fall session starts at Virginia Tech, where he'll continue studies in French.

Christley and his wife, Audrey, live in Roanoke County. He is the son of Terry and Kathy Christley of Roanoke County.

Air Force Airman Xavier Gill graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

The 2003 graduate of William Fleming High School is the son of Debora Gill and the grandson of Agnes Pierson, both of Roanoke.

Army Pvt. Kaiasia Cameron has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

She is the granddaughter of Ann Wilder and a 2006 graduate of William Fleming High School.

Army National Guard Pfc. Katherine Muse is returning to the United States after a deployment to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Muse, a food service specialist with three years of military service, is normally assigned to the 266th Military Police in Manassas.

She is the daughter of Twain and Kim Muse of Troutville.

Air Force Airman Dustin Quesenberry graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is the son of Johnny Quesenberry Jr. of Vinton and Lisa Brasher of Kuttawa, Ky.
