Jonte Craighead, a senior at Franklin County High School, has been selected as a 2009 Ron Brown Scholar.

Craighead, of Rocky Mount, is one of 12 black students selected from 10,000 across the country to receive the honor.

The program was established in 1996 in honor of Brown, the first black secretary of commerce. It gives students the financial resources to attend colleges in addition to promoting outstanding service opportunities for the next generation of promising black leaders.

Craighead, who is graduating in the top 1 percent of his class, also has been recognized as a National Achievement Semifinalist. He has received a two-year Virginia Tech Summer Research Fellowship and has served as a participant in the Caltech Young Engineering and Science Scholars program. He is active with the Keystone Junior Energy Board and serves as vice president of the National Honor Society. He also has served as a teen volunteer with the Franklin County Public Library and as an in-school volunteer as a chemistry student aide.

Ron Brown Scholars are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential, social commitment and financial need.

Nathan Parr, a sophomore at Hampden-Sydney College, has received the Madison Scholarship, an award based on leadership in the community and outstanding academic achievement.

The college's faculty Honors Council gives the scholarship.

Parr, a computer science and psychology major, is a member of the Computer Science Club and the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and is active in intramural sports. He is a graduate of Liberty High School and is the son of the Rev. Jerry Parr and Liz Parr of Bedford.

Two Hampden-Sydney College seniors from the Roanoke Valley recently were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, which recognizes academic achievement, moral character, responsible citizenship and broad intellectual curiosity.

Joshua Seth Cooper and Matthew Ryan Hubbard were inducted April 8.

Cooper is on the dean's list and a member of the Tiger Athletic Club. A philosophy major, he is a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School and is the son of Greg and Teresa Cooper of Troutville.

A Venable Scholar, Hubbard is president of the College Democrats and secretary of the Unity Alliance. He participated in a Summer Research Honors Project in 2008 and in Virginia Commonwealth University's Capitol Semester Program. A political science and history major, he is a graduate of Hidden Valley High School and is the son of Johnnie and Pamela Hubbard of Roanoke.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Corey Ramsey, a 2006 graduate of Staunton River High School and a member of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, N.C., recently returned from a seven-month deployment to the Navy's 5th and 6th Fleets area of operations.

The unit, aboard the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group out of Norfolk, supported regional security and stability operations in Iraq and the Horn of Africa, and conducted theater security cooperation exercises with regional allies and impromptu counterpiracy operations off the coast of Somalia.

Ramsey joined the Marine Corps in September 2007.
