Saint Francis Service Dogs recently received a $1,000 donation from proceeds of the Roanoke Greek Festival, sponsored by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

"We're grateful for this recognition from Roanoke's Greek community," Ben Boone, president of the board of directors for Saint Francis Service Dogs, said in a news release.

"We have a huge demand to meet, and public support is vital for us to continue to provide this important service for individuals with unique needs."

The organization raises and trains service dogs that assist people with physical and emotional disabilities and help them become more independent and self-sufficient. The foundation, one of more than 50 accredited service dog organizations in the world, relies on public contributions to support its mission.

Paul Dallas, chairman of advertising and sponsorship for the Roanoke Greek Festival, said the donation is a token of appreciation for "such a phenomenal organization."

"Saint Francis Service Dogs is a wonderful reflection of the Greek Festival's mission of service and we know this gift will make a difference," Dallas said.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church has been supporting area charities through event proceeds for more than 15 years.

Vinton's drinking water tastes good, according to a panel of judges in the Virginia Rural Water Association's ninth annual taste test competition.

The town's water was rated second-best in a competition held during the association's March conference in Roanoke.

Nine member waterworks from across the state competed. A three-member panel of association members judged the entrants water for quality of taste.

This is the third consecutive year that Vinton water placed in the top three of the competition; it finished third in 2008 and 2007.

"This certainly speaks well of the quality of Vinton water, and we are particularly pleased with our second-place finish this year," said Town Manager Chris Lawrence.

The Virginia Rural Water Association provides training and on-site technical and managerial assistance to the hundreds of small and rural water and wastewater utilities across Virginia. More than 200 waterworks are association members.
