Army Reserve Pfc. Alan Lavinder II has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He is the son of Alan and Gretchen Lavinder of Roanoke and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 2003.

Brig. Gen. Stephen Huxtable has assumed the duties of the assistant adjutant general of Virginia for the Army from Brig. Gen. Eugene Stockton.

Huxtable was promoted to brigadier general in a ceremony at Fort Pickett. The ceremony also marked retirement for Stockton, whose Virginia Army National Guard career began in 1980.

In his new position, Huxtable reports to the adjutant general of Virginia and is responsible for overseeing all training, logistics and personnel matters for almost 8,000 men and women of the guard serving in 47 armories throughout the state.

Stockton joined the Virginia National Guard after serving in the Marine Corps. He is director of the Bureau of Field Operations for the Virginia State Police.

Huxtable's military career began in the Air Force in 1971. After transferring to the Virginia Army National Guard in 1984, he became deputy director of facilities management for the guard. He was assigned as the full-time Virginia Army National Guard chief of staff.

During its recent annual meeting, the Roanoke Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women presented scholarships and elected new officers.

The scholarships went to young women graduating from high school and to nontraditional students who are pursuing degrees after having been out of school for several years.

Alea Bier, a Cave Spring High School senior, will use her scholarship at Roanoke College. She is the daughter of Richard and Rebecca Bier.

Kayla Hanson, who is graduating from Lord Botetourt High School, will attend Liberty University. She is the daughter of Paul and Ida Hanson.

Janet Knopf, who attends Patrick Henry High School and Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, will use her scholarship at the University of Virginia. She is the daughter of Bradley and Katherine Knopf.

April Drummond and Jennifer Waterhouse, students at Hollins University, and Priyankaben Gandhi, a student at Jefferson College of Health Sciences, received scholarships for nontraditional students.

Among the incoming officers is Pam Jones, who was elected co-president and will serve with HelenRuth Burch, who already is in office.

Other officers are Lynne Victorine, vice president for programs; Pam Kestner-Chappelear, vice president for membership; Nora Smith, recording secretary; and Peggy Shifflett, treasurer.
