Hidden Valley Youth wrestlers headed across town to attend the Roanoke Valley Ron Childress Tournament Wrestling Tournament held at Northside Middle School on March 6, and presented by the Roanoke Valley Wrestling Association. The tournament is in honor of Ron Childress who was a wrestler, coach and official in the Roanoke Valley.

Sam Comer finished 4-1 for the day. Sam pinned all four wrestlers with two wins over Hidden Valley teammates, Smith Mountain Lake, and Southside. Sam came away with the gold medal.

Mason Dermott wrestled in the Schoolboy division 108-117 weight class. Mason defeated an opponent from Parkway Wrestling Club 13-0, a Hidden Valley teammate by a 7-0 and a Smith Mountain Lake rival by a 16-0 score. Mason received a Gold Medal for his efforts.

Adam Gordon wrestled in the 68-72 lb. weight class. He took on three foes from Southside and one from Salem. Regardless of the competitor, Adam mowed down the competition as he pinned each in the first period to take home the Gold Medal.

Kiel Cook took home the Silver Medal in the 108 lb. novice division. Kiel had pins against Tunstall and Glenvar wrestling clubs, with a loss against a Smith Mountain Lake grappler.

Tristan Loflin placed second in the Schoolboy division 108-117 lb. weight class. First match, 11-2 Smith Mountain Lake, lost to Mason Dermott of Hidden Valley and then pinned his opponent in the second round Parkway Wrestling Club.

Will Hoff (1st year) took second in the 48-52 lb. weight class. Won his first match against, RC Wrestling 12-4, and then came up short against Mat Pack, losing 14-7. Will rebounded for the final match to win over Blue Ridge 15-7 and capture third place.

Chris Comer (1st year) finished 2-2 for the tournament. He pinned his opponent from Fallon Park then won his second match 10-8 over Glenvar. He lost by points to a Mat Pack opponent and a Christiansburg rival. Chris won a bronze medal.

Jordan Duncan (1st year) took the bronze home after a win over a Salem opponent by points 7-2. He went on to lose the next 2 matches by opponents from Roanoke Gladiators (pin) and by points to Mat Pack.

Reeves McKenney (1st year) took home the bronze medal in the 106-108 lb. weight class. Reeves finished 2-2 on the day with his two losses against seasoned wrestlers. His finished his first wrestling season with a 13-3 record.

Josh Neighbors wrestled in the 75-80 weight class. After battling 5 opponents from SML, Parkway Christian, and Salem with 3 pins, Josh placed 3rd.

Evan Smith (1st year) wrestled in the Midget 91-106 lb. division. Evan came up short on points against a Hidden Valley teammate and a Glenvar opponent and finished with a bronze medal.

Faris Iqbal (1st year) competed in the Novice 41-63 lb. division. Faris had 2 pins on the day against Southside and a Hidden Valley opponent, but came up shy on points in 3 other matches. Faris did not accumulate enough points to finish in the medal count.

Colby Hale (1st year) also wrestled in the Novice 63 lb. division. It's not always about the finish of the day but the level of competition you are able to witness. The most exciting match of the day was Colby against a Gladiator opponent. In a very tight match going back and forth for three periods; it could have gone either way. At the end of the third period it appeared that Colby had put out a last second victory in regulation time. Colby was awarded a point with 1 second left in the final period, which would have sealed the win, but the official withdrew the point and this sent the match into an overtime tie breaker. Colby and his opponent grappled hard for the takedown to win the match and in an exciting finish that could have gone either way Colby came up short and finished outside the medals.

Liam Smith (1st year) competed in the Novice 108-114 lb. division but fell outside of the medals.

High school competitors Josh Slate and Zach Carter placed second, and Tim Yang placed third.
