Roanoke Star U14 Girls Elite team wins division in Kroger Cup

The Roanoke Star U14 Girls Elite soccer team played in the 2009 Kroger Cup on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11. The team won the U14 girl's division championship. The team faced the FASA Premier White, Old Dominion Panthers, Salem Sabres Maroon & Old Dominion Sparx and did not allow a single goal. The team is comprised of girls from Bedford, Franklin County, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem and Vinton.

Cave Spring High School Student vs. Faculty United Way volleyball game

On Thursday, Oct. 29, Cave Spring High School students and faculty gathered in the gymnasium to go head to head in a volleyball game. The faculty's team consisted of "convicts," who were escorted onto the floor by a police officer. The game was held to raise money for the United Way. CSHS students and faculty raised $1,500 to donate to the United Way.

Cave Spring's Courtney Cooper has hot bat in softball tournament

Two Southwest Virginia girls competed within this fastpitch softball tournament at the Botetourt Sports Complex Oct. 17 to 18. Olivia Cleary of Riner posted a 6-12 .500 batting average that included a two-run homerun as well as going the distance on the mound for a 9-3 victory over the 16U Maroon Crush.

Courtney Cooper of Cave Spring was a guest player who performed well at the plate with a "hot" bat and good speed in the outfield. The team posted a 6-0 record for the tournament and these girls played hard in such intense weather conditions with wind chills in the 30s throughout the weekend.
