Tell us where to go
Each week, our camera captures youth sports and recreation in Southwest Roanoke County. Where should we go next? E-mail news@swo-co.com to let us know.
Carter Center Aquatics (CCA) Marlins Coach Eva Steib has been named the 2009 Age-Group Coach of the Year by Virginia Swimming, Inc. Steib, who has been a CCA Marlins coach for 12 years and has more than 25 years of experience, received the honor at the Virginia Swimming Banquet on Sunday, Oct. 4 in Richmond.
"This is such a tremendous honor for me," said Steib who works primarily with the team's 12-and-under swimmers. "It is always nice to be recognized by your fellow coaches."
Each year, Virginia Swimming, the governing body of amateur swimming in Virginia and a portion of North Carolina, solicits nominations from the coaches from more than 50 member clubs for the award. The voting is cast by the coaches. About 6,000 athletes and 250 coaches participate in the Virginia Swimming organization.
During her tenure as a Marlins coach, she has developed several state and nationally ranked swimmers. Her attention to details and basic fundamentals produced a two-time Virginia state champion (Kyle Ewoldt) earlier this year. Steib's 2008 team won the medium sized team division at the state championship meet in March. She also had two 10-and-under relays win state titles in July.
The CCA Marlins swimming program is based at North Cross School's Carter Athletic Center.

The Cave Spring Junior Saints
The Cave Spring Junior Saints have started the season undefeated and Tracy Kletzing tells us: "They are playing great this year and I have pics to prove it. A great bunch of boys. They play their little hearts out at every game and some of the players are really extraordinary. Both of my children are on the team. I have twins. They are 11 years old, their numbers are Johnlogan, number two, and Justinluke, number six. Their last name is Swisher and I am very proud of them. All the boys give it their all, even playing injured. Our coaches, Coach Stoval and Coach Overfelt, have really taught my boys a lot this year and take time out of their busy lives to coach football to these young boys and to teach them discipline and team work and they do a GREAT job. GO SAINTS!"
