The North Cross volleyball team won first place in the 14th annual North Cross School Invitation Volleyball Tournament on Sept. 12.

They defeated The Covenant School in the first round, Bishop Ireton High School in the second round, and Collegiate School in the championship match.

Eight schools, including North Cross, competed in the Tournament.

The team played extremely well against Division I and II schools, preparing them for future matches against VISAA member schools and competition within the Blue Ridge Conference.

"I was extremely proud of the intensity the girls showed throughout the day. Our team is talented and they played together with heart, which is what is takes to win," said Head Volleyball Coach Heather Donaho.

Statistical leaders for the day included: Sarah Jessee with 63 assists and 3 service aces; Marli Dabareiner with 25 kills and 10 service aces; and Anna Black with 5 service aces and 10 kills. Strong, consistent and controlled play from all other team members contributed to the team's success.

Player selections from North Cross School to the All-Tournament team were Sarah Jessee and Marli Dabareiner.

On Fri., Oct. 2, the team will travel to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy to further test their skills. They will spend Friday night in Richmond, competing against The Steward School on Saturday morning.

North Cross School will host the finals of the VISAA state volleyball tournament on Nov. 13 to 14 in the Carter Athletic Center.

This year is the 15th anniversary of North Cross School defeating Bishop O'Connell High School in the first VISAA state tournament.
