Mathcount team competes in national competition

The Hidden Valley Middle School Mathcount team competed at the regional competitions on Feb. 20 at Virginia Tech. Hidden Valley Middle School became champion for the first time.

The team members were Arsalan Khan (grade 8), Chandan Reddy (grade 8), Sreeroopa Som (grade 6) and Sreyas Hirway (grade 8). They will now go to Richmond for the state championship. Arsalan was also the individual champion in written round. Sreeroopa was also the champion in count down round and second placed in written round.

Senator Warner nominates Radford for  Naval Academy

Ben Radford has been nominated by Sen. Mark Warner for the Naval Academy. He received his appointment Feb. 19. Ben is a student at Hidden Valley High School and the Roanoke Valley Governor's School. He the second student at Hidden Valley to receive an appointment.

Radford plays football and soccer for Hidden Valley. He will be the captain of the men's soccer team this spring. He is the son of David and Lisa Radford. He is also the brother to twin siblings, Tim and Hannah. His parents said, "We are very proud of Ben's high standards, love for his community and wanting to serve his country."

Ben has been offered an AFROTC scholarship to attend at Clemson, LSU, Alabama, Kentucky or Tennessee in their school of engineering.

Hidden Valley High School PTSO presents 'Ask the Expert'

What: A forum with answers to parent and students questions regarding high school and college life.

When: Wednesday, March 17

Time: 7 p.m.

Where: Hidden Valley High School Auditorium

Panel members include: David Lawrence, executive, Dale Carnegie; a representative from Member One Credit Union; Kathy Harris, MD; Marian Kelley, Assistant Commonwealth Attorney; Renee Lavin, area coordinator for Roanoke College; Katie McHugh, HVHS Senior Student.

The panel will provide answers to questions such as:

What kind of bank account is best for students who are learning to manage money?

How can I prepare my student for life on a college campus?

What are the legal aspects of risky behavior?

What medical issues are important to know?

How can I fit in high school without conforming to behaviors that make me uncomfortable?

Prizes in a student raffle include aair of HVHS 2010 prom tickets, dinner for two, gift cards.
