Shared social times stretch over half-century
Irene Chausse and Esther Owen became friends in 1955. Fifty-three years later, they still "have a high regard" for each other.

They met in 1955 when they moved to Roanoke from Schenectady, N.Y., with their young families. New homes in the same neighborhood and husbands who worked for General Electric meant a social life for Irene Chausse and Esther Owen that continues today.
The ladies do many things together because "we enjoy each other's company," says Irene. "We have a lot in common."
"Our friendship has grown closer and Irene is the friend I can count on for help with anything," Esther adds. "She takes me to doctor appointments and grocery shopping every week; this helps me a lot."
Their schedules are so busy, I accompanied them to Kroger's on a recent Tuesday, when senior citizens get a 5 percent discount, to talk with them. They go every week with lists and coupons, spending an average of $65 to $75. At checkout, Irene asks for plastic bags to reuse in her trashcans. Esther likes the brown paper bags with handles for easy carrying and recycles, too.
They trade recipes and Irene says everyone loves the applesauce cake she bakes.
Esther buys Blueberry Almond Crisp Cereal to eat with vanilla yogurt for breakfast.
Twice a month, the ladies play bridge together with other friends. A weekly treat is dinner at The Roanoker restaurant.
"We both like classical music and parties," says Irene. "I admire Esther's musical abilities; singing and playing the piano."
"I like to send Irene pictures of my grandkids and funny jokes. We e-mail each other all the time about current events," Esther adds.
They share a love for reading. Irene enjoys "Smithsonian Magazine and Reader's Digest."
"I get U.S. News and World Report every week."
Esther likes "Ladies Home Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, and Simple" magazines.
"We have a high regard for each other," the ladies agree, smiling as they pose for a picture.
