Colonial Avenue Baptist made several hikes to Buffalo Mountain this summer. The views are hard to beat, rivaling Sharp Top and McAfee Knob as among the best in the area. The rocky, treeless summit makes a great picnic destination. At 1 mile and less than 1 hour, it is one of the shortest hikes around with a view this good. Still unkown to most, Buffalo Mountain is just south of Floyd off rt 221. Turn left (south) on 727 (Union School Road) and go about 4.5 miles to Conner Grove Road (VA 799). Turn right onto 799, go about 100 feet and turn left onto Moles Road (VA 727). Go about 1 mile, and turn right to stay on VA 727. Go 1 mile to a 3-way fork. Bear to the right and follow the gravel access road to the summit parking area. An SUV or high clearance vehicle is advisable.

Chase House finishes new cadet training at Virginia Tech

Chase House of Southwest Roanoke County, majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering has finished the new cadet training week with the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, and is now apart of the university's longest standing tradition of leadership development.

The first year cadet experience at Virginia Tech is unlike the experience of most first year college students. The corps first year starts in August with new cadet week held the week prior to the start of classes. During new cadet week, incoming students undergo a series of challenges that build character and leadership skills.

For these incoming students, the academic year is broken into three phases: Red, White, and Blue Phase. Red phase opens with the start of new cadet week and goes until October. New cadets are taught the basics of being active and successful members of the corps during this phase. Students fine tune their skill set during the White Phase. Cadets begin formal training as a leader in the Blue Phase. Students are recognized as completing their first year of training in April.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets has been producing military and corporate leaders since the university was founded in 1872. It is one of just two remaining military corps within a large, primarily civilian university.

Students from Girl Scouts of VA Skyline Troop #460 of Roanoke traveled to the Walt Disney World Resort on Aug. 8 to take part in the Disney Youth Education Series Program (Y.E.S.) "Disney's World of Physics: Energy and Waves."

Each year, groups from around the world travel to Walt Disney World to take part in one of the several Disney Y.E.S. programs offered throughout the Resort. Most of the programs take place in and behind the scenes of the world-famous Theme Parks.

Areas of study include career discovery, life management, physical science, natural science, history, and art and humanities. The programs use varied resources onstage and backstage to bring real world examples to the learning experience. These two- to three-hour interactive educational experiences are available at both the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California. They are led by professional Disney facilitators who help guide the students and assist them in understanding the key lessons.
