"Donnie and the Monsters"  play runs through Sunday

Two people from Southwest Roanoke County are appearing in the play "Donnie and the Monsters," which runs through Sunday at Studio Roanoke in downtown Roanoke.

They are Ross Laguzza and Caitlin Morgan.

The show is described this way: "Donnie has a hard time at school and at home -- what with the other kids picking on him and everything -- and by everything we mean the sock puppet, the monster under his bed, Blackbeard the Pirate, and the talking toilet. This hilarious adult version of a children's book is definitely NOT for children but we think audiences 16 and up will love this weird and wonderful lesson in how to deal with anger and fear."

Several scouts from  Troop 19 earn highest Cadette award

Morgan Ehresman, Valentina Heath, Hayley Punk and Marinne Williams, all of Roanoke -- members of Girl Scout Troop 19 -- have completed their project "Soaps, Shampoos and Passports."

In doing so, they have earned the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve.

To complete the project, Morgan, Valentina, Hayley, and Marinne shared Girl Scout traditions with others, by planning and hosting a Juliette Low (founder of Girl Scouts) birthday party, a Knots-Knives & Krafts workshop, and a Thinking Day event.

Thinking Day is a day in which girls participate in global-themed activities and programs to honor fellow Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. For their Thinking Day event, Morgan, Valentina, Hayley, and Marinne developed passports for attendees to use.

In addition to planning and hosting these events, the four girls collected and donated soaps and shampoos to the Roanoke Rescue Mission and the Ronald McDonald House. The girls collected a total of 464 items for the two charities.

Morgan, a tenth-grader at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, is the daughter of Diana and Robert Ehresman of Roanoke.

Valentina, a tenth-grader at Faith Christian School in Roanoke, is the daughter of Susan and Robert Heath of Roanoke.

Hayley, a tenth-grader at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, is the daughter of Angie Punk of Roanoke.

Benjamin Wolley completes cadet week at Virginia Tech

Benjamin Wolley of Roanoke County finished cadet week training with the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.

Wolley is a freshman majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering.

The first year cadet experience at Virginia Tech is unlike the experience of most first year college students. The corps' first year starts in August with new cadet week held the week prior to the start of classes. During new cadet week, incoming students undergo a series of challenges that build character and leadership skills.

For these incoming students, the academic year is broken into three phases: Red, White, and Blue Phase. Red phase opens with the start of new cadet week and goes until October. New cadets are taught the basics of being active and successful members of the corps during this phase. Students fine tune their skill set during the White Phase. Cadets begin formal training as a leader in the Blue Phase. Students are recognized as completing their first year of training in April.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets has been producing military and corporate leaders since the university was founded in 1872. It is one of just two remaining military corps within a large, primarily civilian university.
