We have two entries from Southwest Roanoke County in the Ultimate Hokie Fan video contest -- Chip Grubb and David Lawson.
They're competing against 11 others for the first prize of $1,500 in groceries from Kroger.
Check out the videos and cast your vote at roanoke.com/contest. The voting runs through Oct. 18.
About Chip Grubb: "Chip bleeds orange and maroon! He has been a season ticket holder since 1980 and has attended over 280 Hokie football games, including all Bowl games in the Frank Beamer era. He has a Hokie Edition Ford Explorer that is VT customized and a Hokie Room complete with Hokiestone fireplace, year-round Hokie Christmas tree, VT tiled flloor, Hokie Bird light covers, and so much more. When Chip was at a charity golf outing, he met John Anderson from ESPN who quickly realized Chip's passion for the Hokies was over the top, and graciously agreed to do this video."
About David "Awesome" Lawson: "I am the ultimate Hokie fan. All of my clothes are orange and maroon. Our kids have been going to Tech games all of their lives. Our dog is even named Hokie. I am quite enthusiastic about tailgating. I drive my wife crazy because I usually like to arrive in Blacksburg at least 7 hours before kickoff. Go Hokies!!"
Princess party
The year-long reign for the current Miss Roanoke Valley and her court is coming to a close. The Southern Hills Chik-fil-A threw a "princess party" recently to honor the princesses. The new court will be crowned in pageants at Mill Mountain Theatre on October 17 and 18.
More bear sightings
Lisa Lauria recently read our article "Bears spotted in Southwest Roanoke County" in the Sept. 18 issue and shared her bear experience:
"My family also lives in Fairway Forest and has experienced the bears. Beginning three years ago this October, we had a large bear tear our garage door in two and enter our garage at approximately 1 a.m. He then proceeded to our refrigerator in our garage. He helped himself to chocolate chip cookie dough, sticks of butter and cinnamon toast sticks. He opened frozen organic corn and refrigerated pizza but left those items.
"We called 911 and were told there was nothing they could do, but we should call the game warden in our area. The game warden did visit our house the next day and talked to us but said there was nothing he could do because the bear was not a nuisance and this area was not he usual habitat as he was probably passing through. We shared that we were concerned for our kids who often go out to garage for a drink from that refrigerator, but he said the bear would probably be more scared of them and knock them over and keep running! We couldn't believe it. It is now three years later and we continue quite often to have bear visits in our garbage can which is outside of the garage."
