Sugar Loaf Garden Club seeks new members

The Sugar Loaf Garden Club will open its October meeting and special presentation to the public. Entitled "Fall Flowers for Special Occasions," it will be presented by award-winning floral designer Billy Shepard at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Refreshments will preceed the speaker at 10 a.m. The meeting is at the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs, 3640 Colonial Avenue, Roanoke, 24018. Tickets are $8 at the door.

The Sugar Loaf Garden Club, a small but active group limited to 23 members, is now accepting new members. Come to the program and meet us. We'd be happy to tell you about our other gardening and charitable activities.

Six Southwest County children appear in 'The Giver'

Six children from Southwest Roanoke County star in the upcoming production of "The Giver" at the Roanoke Children's Theatre. They are: Alex Cutting, Emma Hartman, Amanda Data, Lilian Flick, Kelly Devens and Moss Stratton.

From the well known novel by Lois Lowry, "The Giver" is about 12-year-old Jonas who lives in a seemingly perfect futuristic world and what he does when he learns the great price his community pays for such perfection.

The show runs Oct. 6-11 at the Taubman Museum of Art.
