Virginia Cooperative Extension will hold a workshop called "Extending the Garden Harvest" at the Brambleton Center, room 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Now that the weather is cooling down, learn techniques for extending your garden harvest into the fall and winter months. Learn how to use the same techniques to get a jump-start on the spring garden. The class is free, but registration is requested.

Picnic for Eastern Europeans in Garst Mill Park

Art Bailie of Salem is organizing a picnic for former residents of the U.S.S.R. and countries in Eastern Europe. It will be Sept. 20 in Garst Mill Park in Southwest Roanoke County. He says last year's picnic was in Longwood Park.

He says: "To folks from the former USSR and Eastern Europe living in the Roanoke Valley (and beyond), you are invited to join your friends -- and make new ones -- at a picnic in the park."

The event starts at 4 p.m. in the picnic shelter.

"We request that you bring enough food and non-alcoholic drinks for your family and a little extra for visitors," he says. "Plates, cups, ice and some serving utensils will be provided."

Cave Spring graduate recognized as member of Sigma Alpha Lambda

Sigma Alpha Lambda is proud to announce that Samuel Martin Lasky has recently become recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the James Madison University.
