Southwest County girl a contestant for Outstanding Teen

The Miss Virginia pageant is this weekend at the Roanoke Civic Center. One of the preliminary events is the Outstanding Teen competition and one of the contestants is Abby Erdman of Southwest Roanoke County, who won the Smith Mountain Lake pageant earlier this year.

Abby is a junior at the Burton Center for the Performing Arts and Hidden Valley High School. She is a member of the Hidden Valley Drill Team and dances at Divine Dance Center in Southwest County. Abby's platform is "Forever Homes," providing care and shelter for homeless animals.

Miss Virginia Outstanding Teen will hold its preliminary events (talent, interview, fitness and evening gown) on Friday, June 26, at Hotel Roanoke with the finals taking place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 27th at the Civic Center.

Want to help Abby win a savings bond? This year there's Internet voting. Each vote costs 99 cents, but whoever wins the Internet voting wins a savings bond. For a link to the voting, plus more photos of Abby, see The Notebook on swo-co.com

Patriotic celebration at Cave Spring Baptist

Cave Spring Baptist Church will hold a Patriotic Celebration on Sunday, June 28 at 5 p.m. The service will be held at Cave Spring Middle School on Bogle Field.

Dinner will be held on the grounds following the service and will include hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, and ice cream each for just 25 cents.

We've got some great summer programs lined up for you this year. Take a look at some of the examples below. It's not too late to sign up for summer camps. While many of our camps are already full, you'll find there are still a few spaces left.

Also, please be aware that beginning July 1, the Teen Center will only be open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The reduced hours are one of the impacts of revenue shortfalls in Roanoke County due to the nationwide economic downturn last year.
