2 S.W. County seniors honored at scholarship dinner

Two Southwest Roanoke County students were among 18 Virginia high school seniors honored by the BBB Serving Western VA at the 11th annual Student of Integrity Scholarship Awards Dinner. Samantha Leigh of Hidden Valley High School and Sebastian Wellford of Cave Spring High School were celebrated at the annual event that recognizes students for demonstrating ethics demonstrated through leadership, community service, and overall personal integrity. At the dinner, which was held on April 9 at the Shenandoah Club in Roanoke, 18 students of integrity were presented with a $1,000 scholarship.

Roanoke County facility celebrates National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week

In 1991, Congress first proclaimed the second week of April as a nationally recognized week of recognition of the dedicated men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators.

The Festivus Games are directed toward growing the sport of CrossFit and fitness among those who are either novice or intermediate level athletes. Rachael Thayer shaves her head to raise funds for St. Baldrick's Foundation

Here is a follow up on Rachael Thayer's recent community event for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.  Rachael is a 15-year-old student at Hidden Valley High who has been participating in a fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in memory of Shereen Massoud.  On April 12th she shaved her head in solidarity for children with cancer.

Clearbrook Elementary School presents 'Singing and Playing Through the Seasons'

Kindergartners and first-graders at Clearbrook Elementary celebrated spring with a performance for family, friends, and fellow classmates recently.  Entitled 'Singing and Playing Through the Seasons,' children sang, played percussion instruments, danced, and performed a light show.  Music teacher Nichole Booker led the students in songs such as 'Whacky Spring Fever,' 'Sum-Sum-Summertime,' and 'Snow is Falling Today.'  A highlight of the show were to custom-made shirts each performer donned!

Roanoke Express Bantam hockey team wins league championship

The Roanoke Express Bantam hockey team won the Carolina League Championship on Sunday, March 9, in Raleigh, N.C. Players from Roanoke and Lynchburg include Andy Van Osten, Matthew Bolinger, Matthew Fleck, Mike Jirout, Mark Jirout, Matthew Pietrizyk, Marc Sharrer, Ian Fleck, Wes Brown, Austin Nardo, Bryson Sanchez, Stuart Souza and David Shahady.

Roanoke Valley Governor's School offers free three week summer science camp

The Roanoke Valley Governor’s School is sponsoring a free three week summer science camp for rising sixth and seventh grade students. The camp will meet from June 16 through July 3. The camp is open to all students but preference for admission will be given to students who show strong potential in math and science and are from groups that are historically under-represented at RVGS. The program and application form can be found at http://www.rvgs.k12.va.us/pages/Roanoke_Valley_Gov_Sch. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to become acquainted with RVGS and hopefully be motivated to do well academically during middle school.

Police charge man with burglary in Southwest Roanoke County

On Tuesday, April 15th, 2014 at 2136 hours, Roanoke County Police Officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 3600 block of View Avenue.  Upon arrival, Officers located two occupants that were holding the male suspect on the floor.  Officers were able to place the male suspect under arrest.  The male suspect was identified as Zachary Adam Phoenix, 25 years old, of Franklin County. Mr. Phoenix was transported to the Roanoke County/Salem Jail where the following charges were placed: (1)Burglary while Armed with Deadly Weapon,  (2) Robbery and  (3) Malicious Wounding.  Mr. Phoenix is being held without bond.

On Friday, April 11, students, teachers, and parents celebrated one of the most important traditions at Hidden Valley High School: the naming of the new class of Titan 12. The assembly took place in the auditorium at HVHS and began with a short speech from Principal Rhonda Stegall. According to Stegall, the Titan 12 “is one of the highest honors bestowed upon the students here… Each spring the faculty will recognize twelve juniors who best represent the ideals of character, leadership, academics, service and attitude.”

Celebrate KIDS! summer camps now enrolling in S.W. County

Beginning June 9, Celebrate KIDS! is offering 11 weeks of themed summer camps. During each weekly themed camp, children will take two field trips, enjoy daily play time at a local park, participate in engaging Bible devotions, and experience a variety of hands-on activities that incorporate art, music, science, dance and drama. Children will also participate in service projects for Southwest Virginia Food Bank and the Rescue Mission throughout the summer.

The Roanoke County School Board has approved the 2014-15 school calendar.  The 2014-15 school year will begin on August 25, 2014 and will conclude on June 4, 2015 with graduation taking place on June 5, 2015.

Oil painting class starts Wednesday at Brambleton Center

Learn how to paint on canvas with no previous experience required! This course will cover surface preparation, palette layout, materials handling, color and shading techniques. Great for beginners, those who have painted with acrylics, or those who want to brush up on their skills. Six week program. Supply list will be given when class minimum is met. Class meets Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brambleton Center starting April 16.

Fire damages home in Southwest Roanoke County

Roanoke County Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 3600 block of Colony Lane at about 2:45 Thursday afternoon.

When crews first arrived, they reported smoke and flames coming from the back of a single story residential structure. Firefighters from the Cave Spring, Clearbrook and Back Creek stations had the flames knocked down in about 15 minutes. The fire damage was contained to the back deck and kitchen of the house, but there is smoke and water damage to the home.

No one was home at the time the fire started. A neighbor called 9-1-1 reporting that she could see flames in the backyard. Red Cross is assisting the couple who lived in the home.

No injuries were reported.

Fire investigators are on scene.

Clearbrook Elementary held its first annual Spring Dance on Friday, April 4th! We had a fantastic turn out and the kids had a great time! Three students won trophies for their awesome dance moves, which were chosen by parent judges. Brooke Majors took third place, Hudson Snyder won 2nd place, and first place went to Kate Manico! Local DJ James Bagliani kept the crowd moving, playing great music and providing fun games for the kids!

Preschoolers and their parents and grandparents embraced the long-awaited spring recently at Darrell Shell Park with a party hosted by South County Library.  Stories about Easter and spring were told, candy-filled eggs were hunted, crafts were made, food was shared, and the Easter Bunny even made a visit!

Each graduating senior at FCS is required to complete a year-long research project culminating in the oral presentation and defense of a substantive argument on a debatable question. During the process, students refine their critical thinking, research, and rhetoric skills, and come to understand why Senior Thesis is considered the capstone of a Faith Christian School education. Selected presentations are public (noted below) and all are warmly invited to attend.

The members of the Cave Spring Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary will be holding their Annual Spring Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, May 3rd at the rescue squad building located on Brambleton Avenue at the intersection of Brambleton and Garst Mill Road. The dinners will be served between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00 pm and the price is $8.00 per dinner. The dinner consists of ½ barbecued chicken, green beans, cole slaw, and a roll. Drive-through and Eat-In service is offered. Those wishing to eat at the rescue squad will be offered, tea, lemonade, or coffee with their meal. A Bake Sale is also available starting at 4:00 pm.
