IA Barbara Kyle of Oak Grove to retire at the end of the school year

Barbara Kyle, an Instructional Assistant at Oak Grove School since 1999, will be retiring from teaching come June. Mrs. Kyle, as she’s known at OG, was a high school basketball player in Harrisonburg and received a degree in social work from JMU. She worked off and on as a social worker while also having stints as a stay-at-home-mom for her four children, but ultimately wanted to be able to spend her summers with her kids – and that desire lead her to the IA job.

Clearbrook Elementary kicks off Spring break with egg hunts

Customers to the Oak Grove Plaza McDonald's may have thought it was an April Fool's Day prank when they were greeted at the cash register by an Oak Grove teacher instead of a McDonald's employee...but rest assured, this was no joke!  On April 1, Oak Grove participated in their first-ever McTeacher's Night.  For three hours, teachers worked the counter and the drive-through window, and sold boxes of cookies -- all in an effort to raise money for Oak Grove's PTA.  McDonald's had generously promised to donate 25% of all proceeds made during those three hours to the OG PTA. 

Oak Grove's fourth-graders present 'Mr. Madison's Front Porch'

On April 8, the fourth-grade class of Oak Grove Elementary School presented 'Mr. Madison's Front Porch,' a performance celebrating Virginia featuring song, dance, and instrumentals.  Under the able direction of music teacher Gloria Howell, Mr. and Mrs. Madison came alive with portrayals by Noah Moretz and Emma Kate Shaver.  Parents, friends, and classmates were entertained by the guitar ensemble, pitched percussion demonstrations, and recorders.  The Virginia Reel made for a lively break in show and the many soloists were applauded both for their skill and nerves of steel!  (Soloists were DeAsia Williams, Emma Kate Shaver, Harman Kanda, Desiree' Williams, Julia Torre, Rebecca Justice, Kelsey Roche, and Elizabeth Milne.) 

Health Focus to offer youth sports physicals at Northside on May 17

It’s time for our Annual Middle and High School Sports Physicals! This is a community service offered to all students entering grades 7-12 for the 2014-15 academic year and living in Roanoke, Salem and surrounding areas. The physicals are very comprehensive and low-cost -- $17 per student -- and surpass sports physical requirements. This event will take place at Northside High School on Saturday, May 17. Sports participation not required. All students need to arrive between 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Third annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Muscle Walk Amazing Race held in Salem

The third annual MDA Muscle Walk Amazing Race took place Sunday, April 6th, at the Salem Civic Center. Over 200 participants from MDA families and Roanoke Valley businesses raised $45,000 to fight 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Oak Grove's Anne Fox to retire from teaching

Anne Fox has been teaching since Jimmy Carter was President, but she’s getting ready to lay down her chalk come June. Of course, nowadays teachers use SmartBoards and Expo Markers, though Mrs. Fox, as those at Oak Grove Elementary know her, is one who appreciates the tried and true ways which come from a 30+ year career teaching Kindergarten.

Jack Barbour, a first-grade student at Cave Spring Elementary, recently achieved his fifth star and earned a karate medal through Superkicks, located in the West Village shopping center in Southwest Roanoke County. Jack earned his medal by working hard as a student at Superkicks, school, and by being a good citizen. Jack is currently a green belt at Superkicks, where he is learning American Freestyle Karate.

Hidden Valley Middle boys soccer team bests Cave Spring Middle by a score of 2-0

The Cave Spring Middle School boys soccer team traveled to Hidden Valley Middle on April 17 to play the Eagles on their home field.  Both teams played hard, but HVMS came out with the win with a score of 2-0.  Felipe Garcia scored both times for the Eagles. 

Brandon Oaks to honor Earth Day by planting large tree on campus

Brandon Oaks Retirement Community will take part in the international celebration of Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, by planting a 12’-14’ Norway Spruce tree at 10:30am. The large, evergreen tree will be placed at the entrance to Brandon Oaks as a welcome addition to the beautifully landscaped grounds. Residents and staff have been invited to witness as the Norway Spruce is lowered into place. Along with the planting of the evergreen tree, residents will be able to learn more about Earth Day’s beginnings in the 1970s and different ways to help the environment in their daily life.

Cave Spring Symphonic Band receives superior rating from VBODA

On March 12th, the Cave Spring Symphonic Band traveled to Bristol, Virginia to perform in the 2014 Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association Concert Assessment. The ensemble performed, in concert, three selections that were judged by a panel of music educators. These judges listened and evaluated the performance on many criteria that include the overall performance within standards used by the VBODA. With all taken into account, the Symphonic Band received Superior ratings from across the panel. Superior is the highest level of achievement and pursued by all ensembles attending the event.

Cave Spring Middle School hosts track meet

Cave Spring Middle School played host to Hidden Valley Middle, Faith Christian, and Northside Middle in a quad track meet on April 9.  The cold and wind didn't stop these middle schoolers from running their hardest and giving their best while representing their respective schools.  In both the boys' and girls' division, Cave Spring Middle bested Faith Christian, Hidden Valley Middle, and Northside Middle.  Hidden Valley Middle and Northside Middle both came out on top against Faith Christian School.  First place finishers in each event are listed below.

Burton Center for Arts and Technology students participate in SkillsUSA-Virginia

The 50th annual SkillsUSA Virginia Leadership Conference and Skill Competition took place on April 4-5 at the Roanoke Civic Center.  Approximately 1,300 high school and college students participated in 102 competitions demonstrating their skills in career areas including manufacturing, transportation, construction, hospitality and human services.  Roanoke County's Burton Center for Arts and Technology had more than 36 students representing all five Roanoke County high schools participate.

Hidden Valley High School freshman clarinetist Ben Phillips performed with the All-Virginia Band from April 3-5.  Nearly 800 wind, brass, and percussion players auditioned in February, and 230 made one of three ensembles. Conductors were Alfred Watkins (Lassister High School, Georgia), Craig Kirchoff (University of Minnesota), and Walt Straiton (Corona Symphony, California).  The event was held at the Moss Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech.

The WVTF/Radio IQ Book Club has a real treat coming -- discussing "Sense and Sensibility" by Joanna Trollope. The book is part of the Austen Project, a rewrite of classic novels to show modern-day relevance. It's been described as "entertaining and ingenious." Shirley Lendway, book club member and adjunct faculty member in English and political science at Central Virginia Community College, will moderate the evening session, at 7 p.m. April 29 at WVTF's Broadcast Center, 3520 Kingsbury Lane.
