A number of  area students are RAYSAC REAL Team members and participated. They attended a 5K walk for awareness and support of a multitude of issues affecting people around the world. The walk took place at Fallon Park.

Sustainable gardening training coming to Catawba on May 3

The Catawba Sustainability Center presents the Sustainable Gardening Training Series with Mark Schonbeck. These workshops will provide support to gardeners and small farm producers throughout the growing season by addressing common issues and practices at the beginning, middle, and end of the growing season. Held at the Catawba Sustainability Center, each workshop will be composed of a classroom session and field session. The next session will be held Saturday May 3 from 2pm to 5pm at the Catawba Sustainability Center. This month's topic will be: Preparing for Planting: Planning, Soil Amendments, Seedlings and Direct Seed, Planting in the Gardens at Catawba, etc.

HopeTree Family Services and the City of Salem Parks and Recreation Department are sponsoring the Glow For Hope 5K Run & Walk on the evening of Friday, May 9. Runners and walkers will illuminate Salem’s streets wearing glow bracelets and necklaces at twilight to raise funds and awareness for HopeTree Family Services’ ministry to at-risk children and youth, as well as adults with intellectual disabilities.

Salem recognizing May as Asthma Awareness Month

Salem’s City Council recognized the growing problem of asthma which affects about 2,000 children and adults in the city, by proclaiming May 2014 as Asthma Awareness Month. Council member Lisa Garst presented the official proclamation to Diana Christopulos of Salem, who is the current president of the Greater Roanoke Valley Asthma and Air Quality Coalition.

City of Salem announces recycling partnership for greenway
