Green Ridge Recreation Center day camp program extended for Aug. 18-22

Looking for full day summer enrichment Aug. 18 to 22? It's the week before school, and there are relatively few camp options during that time. The Green Ridge Recreation Center summer day camp program has been extended to provide another week of care for ages 5 through 12.

Sam McSherry of Salem, Va., has won first place in the SkillsUSA national championship competition in masonry. The SkillsUSA Championships, held in Kansas City, Mo., took place June 24-26, 2014, as part of the SkillsUSA 50th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), a showcase of career and technical education students. During the week, more than 6,000 outstanding career and technical education students - all state contest winners - competed hands-on in 99 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner holds a 25-point lead over Republican Ed Gillespie (47 percent to 22 percent), according to the Roanoke College Poll. Libertarian Robert Sarvis polled at 5 percent. In the generic Congressional ballot, Democrats hold a nonsignificant lead over Republicans (38 percent to 36 percent).

Bill Cox of Salem was the overall winner at the Roanoke Valley Senior Golf Tour's tournament played July 23 at the Old Mill Resort in Laurel Fork. Playing in Division 3, (handicaps over 19) Cox recorded a net score of 66. Other Division 3 winners were: 2nd, Gary Webb - 71; 3rd, Val Bernys - 71; 4th, Tim Smith - 71; 5th, Wayne Wimmer - 72.
