Roanoke College, Habitat for Humanity team up again to build home

For the ninth year in a row, Roanoke College and Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley have teamed up with Roanoke College’s incoming freshmen and transfer students to build a house for a family in need as part of the 2014 new student orientation. From Sunday, Aug. 24, through Tuesday, Aug. 26, the “R House” was partially constructed on campus behind Olin Hall on a raised platform. Roanoke College students and staff worked with community volunteers, Habitat staff and the homeowner family to receive hands-on experience with tasks ranging from hammering a nail to raising the walls of the house.

Roanoke County School Board names Jeff Terry Chief Information Officer

The Roanoke County School Board has named Jeff Terry as the district’s first chief information officer to lead the technology department. Terry first joined Roanoke County Public Schools in 1994 as a computer technology specialist. In 1998, Terry became the district’s manager of information systems and has served in that position since. Terry holds a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University.

The Preston Papers, an important collection of local documents recently found in the attic of an old house in Salem, has earned statewide recognition. In a poll designed to raise awareness of the threat to Virginia’s cultural heritage, the papers have been designated the “People’s Choice.” Online public voting for the “Top Ten Endangered Artifacts” program of the Virginia Association of Museums ended Saturday, Aug. 23, with the Salem Museum’s nomination garnering 4,103 votes, more than any other museum in the commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
