The City of Salem Department of Parks and Recreation held the Youth Football Jamboree Saturday, Aug. 22, at Spartan Field in Salem. Hundreds of youths participated in the scrimmage. Coaches were allowed on the field to help align the players. Each scrimmage lasted 30 minutes. All teams had two scrimmage opportunities. No scores were recorded and no kicking game was used.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, the Salem Family YMCA hosted Splash and Dash, a biathlon for children ages 6 and up. Participants in the 5-9 age group competed in a 50-yard swim and a 1/2 mile run, while participants ages 9 and up competed in a 100-yard swim and 1 mile run. Prizes were awarded to the top finishers in each age group. The event was led by YMCA swim teach coach Jennifer Harris, and, head coach Clyde Smith.
