Two Glenvar Middle School robotics teams under the direction of Technology Education teacher Sarah Gerrol competed in the First Lego League Regional competition in November, and came home with a Region 2 championship.

The Gentlemen won first place for their "Sky car" project and participated in the state tournament at James Madison University in December. Judges commented: "complex robot design, consistent in all areas, professional and mature."

The Highlanders did a study on carpooling and placed second for their research project presentation -- they were alternates to attend the state competition. The judges said they were "amazingly knowledgeable about their research project, quick and confident to answer questions." Team members include TJ Baumgart, Igor Ponjavic, Taylor Linkous, Jason Ford, Christian Bower, and Andrew Gilbert.

The competition, part of which happens on a Lego table, consisted of four parts, each with equal weight:

Robot design: The students build and program a robot using computer programming language

Robot challenge: The students' robot completes challenges on a table set up with obstacles

Research presentation: This year's theme is "Smart Move: Transforming Transportation"

Team work: the team works together to complete a previously unknown challenge on site.

Two Glenvar teachers named finalists for 11th annual McGlothlin Awards

Jennifer Barger of Glenvar Elementary and Sharon Hill of Glenvar Middle School are among six teachers named as finalists for the 2010 McGlothlin Awards for Teaching Excellence.

Barger is one of three finalists in the elementary category; Hill one of three finalists in the middle and high school category.

Hill and Barger are among six of Southwest Virginia's best teachers who have been selected as finalists for the McGlothlin Awards. Two winners, who will be awarded $25,000 each, will be announced April 13 at a ceremony conducted by the McGlothlin Foundation, Blue Ridge PBS and Radford University's College of Education and Human Development.

The awards ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in Bondurant Auditorium at Radford University's Preston Hall. It concludes an afternoon of activities marking the McGlothlin Celebration of Teaching, which starts at 4 p.m. at various locations on campus.

Blue Ridge PBS administers the months-long candidate application and judging process for the McGlothlin Awards. The awards, which are among the largest teaching prizes in the United States, are given annually by the McGlothlin Foundation of Bristol, Va. Only teachers in selected portions of Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky are eligible. Two winning teachers, one from grades K-5 and one from grades 6-12, must use $10,000 of the $25,000 award for international travel, and then apply that experience to enrich their teaching.

"Honoring two outstanding teachers seems simple. However, as a volunteer judge, I have realized just how challenging a task this is," said Tracy Easterling, a 2008 McGlothlin Award winner from Bristol, Tenn. "The applicants are all outstanding, and have deeply touched the lives of their students and positively impacted the communities in which they live. The McGlothlin Award is so much more than an honor for teachers. It is a chance to change their lives and the lives of the students they teach. The knowledge, enthusiasm, and insight into the global community gained through international travel afforded by this award will continue to inspire generations of students."

The finalists, who were selected from 20 semi-finalists, were judged based on a standards-based lesson plan with a 20-minute video of themselves teaching the lesson in their classrooms. Judges will next conduct interviews to further evaluate the finalists. Criteria include classroom instruction, classroom management, interaction with students, and use of instructional technology such as computers, video, or digital cameras.

Blue Ridge PBS has administered the McGlothlin Awards since 1999. The station serves the region's classrooms by providing instructional broadcasts, online resources, special projects and professional development for teachers.
