The Fort Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded the DAR Medal of Honor to Cabell Brand of Salem, Virginia, May 8. The award, the highest one presented by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, honors outstanding men or women who are United States citizens by birth who have shown extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service and patriotism.

Brand was honored for contributions which impacted the lives of individuals in the Salem and Roanoke area, the state, the nation and the world.

Brand founded Total Action Against Poverty in the Roanoke Valley in 1965, where he served as its President and Chairman for 30 years.

John B. Williamson, III, Chairman, President and CEO of RGC Resources, Roanoke, Virginia, wrote "Cabell accomplished this level of community public service not as an elected or appointed government official, but as a volunteer while successfully building a major business that provided local jobs and contributed to community economic vitality. He is living proof that you can be entrepreneurial and highly successful in both commercial and human service endeavors simultaneously. He has developed and maintained a personal balance for building wealth and building community that very few can imagine, much less emulate."
