North Roanoke County
What is North Roanoke County? Generally, from Hollins to North Lakes, from the Botetourt County line in the north to the Salem city limits in the south. Or, put another way, the Northside High School district.
The basics: Roanoke County was founded in 1838. It takes its name from the Indian word for shell money. Plus, the Roanoke River ran through the place. About 90,482 people live in Roanoke County, according to the 2006 U.S. Census estimate.
Of note: Home to Hollins University, founded in 1842, and one of the oldest women’s colleges in the country.
