Tell us where to go

Each week, our camera captures youth sports and recreation in Botetourt County. Where should we go next? E-mail news@botetourtview.com to let us know.

The Region C Cross country 1A cross country meet was held at Greenfield/Botetourt Sports Complex on Thursday, Nov. 5, under sunny skies but chilly breezes blowing across Tinker Mountain saw James River runner Britta Grim become the only county runner to go onto state competition. Grim finished 6th overall in the girls competition.

The JRHS coaches, teachers and staff helped AD Sheila Proffit time the event and present medals and trophies. Parents, coaches and well wishers shouted encouragement to the runners as they sprinted toward the end of the course. Parents remarked on the difficulty of the course, so it was a good preview of state.

James River Cross Country runners:

Girls: Britta Grim, Heather Funk, Emily Spangler, Sierra Claunch, Katherine Day, Maggie Grumbine, Haley Baker.

Boys: Austin Bryant, Ben Persinger, Dylan Coleman, Tyler Kern, Andrew Fields, Wyatt Hubbard, Stephen Gray.

Lord Botetourt at Region 3 cross country meet

Lord Botetourt didn't have any top finishers in the region Cross Country meet. It was held Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Greenfield course in the shadow of the Botetourt Sports Complex, but they ran with some of the best runners in the state and finished well nonetheless. Micah Luedkte actually ran much of the race with only one shoe! A teammate picked it up and brought it to him, said LBHS Coach Pete Walton, who along with assistant coach Kathryn Mills busily walked Greenfield watching for the Cavs runners.

As host of the meet, LBHS Athletic Director Chuck Pound had plenty of helpers, such as retired coach Jerry Wirtz and Larry Carter, the retired AD on site, and especially thanked Parks and Recreation at the end of the meet for all of their help. Hundreds of parents, grandparents and friends attended the meet.

Those who ran for LBHS on Wednesday were:

Girls: Erin Turney, Sarah Hammer, Jessica Snead, Taylor Cline and Samantha Bailey.

Boys: Michael Chesser, Brett Crocker, Mitch Willis, Bennett Witcher, Dylan Turnan, Micah Luedkte and Tyler Barnett.
