The Botetourt 4-H Horse & Pony Club and Catawba Equestrian Center, owned by Debbie Bono, hosted the Australian Dressage Judge, Colleen Kelly, for a biomechanics riding clinic. Kelly spends about six months per year giving riding clinics in the United States. She holds the distinction of being the only coach to score a 100 on the dressage coaching test. Her work in the field of Sport's Biomechanics and exercise physiology and rehabilitation has taken her all over the world to work with riders of all ages and abilities. She is especially proud of her work with disabled and handicapped riders.
Kelly's riding clinic took place from Friday, March 27, to Sunday, March 29. On Friday evening Kelly gave a lecture and PowerPoint presentation on safety and the biomechanics of riding.
On Saturday, Kelly gave individual riding lessons to groups of three riders. Many members of the club, including Kristy Maier, Savannah Etzler, Tina Haxton, Scotia Haxton, Jessica Gross, Miana Patterson, and Shana Patterson took advantage of Kelly's lessons.
She proved to be an excellent lecturer. She took the time to work with each rider to improve their overall balance and gave each of them ways to improve their riding technique.
Safety was the number one recurring theme throughout the weekend. She was also happy to answer questions from the club members who were present but were not able to participate in individual lessons. On Sunday, she again gave lessons, and Bono took the time to get some pointers on her riding skills.
