Great gourds
Jack had his bean stalk and Dottie Underwood has her giant gourd plant. Like a fairy tale and fortunately not like a Halloween tale, the giant gourd plant has found a magic place and grew and grew this summer! The Botetourt View could wax poetic how it grew all the way down to the James River and the elves and fairies made boats out of the gourds and had a big adventure on the James River! Alas all for naught!
The reality? Underwood of Springwood Greenhouse used her green thumb when she planted this gourd plant. It has a stalk as think as a child's arm and it grew across the greenhouse and out the ventilation window then branched out grew across the floor and out the front door. The giant gourds -- two of them -- formed on the ventilation window.
Underwood said, "I have never seen such a plant, but I think that these two gourds are going to be the only ones to form because the weather has gotten cooler." They are gianormous!

Church celebrates pastor's 25th anniversary
On Sunday, Oct. 4th, Glade Creek Baptist Church in Blue Ridge, celebrated 25 years of ministry with Dr. Philip E. Ayers as the pastor.
He was recognized by the deacons, who related instances of faithful service to the congregation as a whole, as well as individually, during times of crises and need. Dr. Phil was also thanked and given a round of applause as they recalled the dedication and hard work he lead on the recent renovation of the sanctuary.
Representing the congregation, the deacons presented Pastor Ayers with an anniversary clock and a financial gift to show their gratitude for his many years of service. Pastor Ayers gave special recognition to his wife, Lois, in honor of her faithfulness and support to him and the church during his years of ministry.
"She is why I am still here," was his statement of praise, as he gave her a loving hug and kiss at the pulpit.
Larry Seay, one of Pastor Ayers' favorite local Christian singers, gave recognition and ministry in singing. Numerous members of the local Christian Motorcycle Association (BRCR Chapter #264), of which Pastor Ayers is their chaplain, also attended the service and celebration.
A potluck luncheon concluded the day of celebration for the entire congregation and visitors.
