Investigators have taken DNA samples, dental impressions, hand prints and X-rays from the suspect in last week's beating of a Blacksburg waitress.
Investigators hope that evidence matches injuries suffered by the victim, identified only as a 23-year-old waitress and bartender, when she was attacked from behind early Wednesday in the 200 block of North Main Street, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
The suspect, 26-year-old Holland Blaine Davy of Covington, is being held without bond on charges of abduction and attempted sexual assault.
The victim told police she was repeatedly hit in the face by the man who grabbed her, pulled her into the stairwell of the former Ton 80 Club, tore at her clothes and beat and choked her to unconsciousness. Other injuries include an apparent bite mark, the affidavit said.
"The victim stated that after a period of time, she tried to convince him to let her go and she would meet him later," the affidavit said. "The victim advised that he told her he was staying in a hotel and gave her the name and a room number."
Witnesses who later came forward told police they spoke to a man who came out of the alleyway that night and appeared to be agitated. The man said his name was Dave, that he was from Covington and that he was staying at a hotel while doing construction in town, the affidavit said.
Davy, a West Virginia native, has lived in Covington and worked for Fitzgerald Excavating and Construction in Covington for the past year, according to court papers. Although downtown employees recognized Davy as being among the construction crews on the downtown-improvement project, he was not on the payroll of any company working on that project, according to DLB Inc. of Hillsville, a general contractor.
Blacksburg police would not comment on where Davy was working. The town of Blacksburg cannot search building projects by a contractor's name, according to the town's planning office.
Davy had been staying at the Red Roof Inn on South Main Street and did not come back to his room Wednesday morning after a night of drinking with co-workers, the affidavit said. He was sent home Wednesday morning because he was still too drunk to work, the affidavit said.
Police found a hat in the alley after the attack that appeared similar to one Davy wore out drinking, the affidavit said.
Davy has a history of alcohol-related arrests, including DUI charges in Radford and Giles County and a slew of charges that resulted from a police chase in Greenbrier County, W.Va., in 1998, according to court records. As part of his sentence, he was ordered to undergo substance-abuse treatment.
Blacksburg police continue to investigate the attack, and investigators have labeled Davy a suspect in other crimes in town, including burglary and a rumored second attack on a woman two weeks ago.
Police, through the search warrant, also took pictures of Davy's tattoos and any injuries, including a black eye he sported in court last week.
