Floyd concert keeps focus on Christ

FLOYD - Few beverages are as biblical as wine, yet David Morrisette, owner of Chateau Morrisette winery and restaurant, won't serve any at his June 19 Concert for Christ.

Morrisette said he got the idea for the concert a couple of years ago during prayer. "It wasn't really a vision. God just said, 'I just want you to have a concert in honor of my son.' And I said, 'OK, Lord.'"

The concert will be held in a natural amphitheater with Buffalo Mountain as a backdrop near the winery at 3641 Black Ridge Road in Floyd. No alcohol will be served to keep the event strictly family-friendly, Morrisette said.

Last year about 300 people showed up for the first concert, but it's not really about how many people come, Morrisette said. "We don't know where it's going. We're letting the Lord lead it."

This year's bands will include the Church of the Holy Spirit praise band from Roanoke; Big Soda praise band, which performs in Roanoke and Blacksburg; the Floyd County Christian band Redeemed; and Mile Marker 1, a local youth band.

There will also be a praise and worship service followed by speaking and testimonies. Kids can enjoy a petting zoo with baby kangaroos and a moon walk.

"We wanted to make it an amazing, fun-filled day but keep the focus on Christ," Morrisette said.

One way he plans to keep that focus is to give away all the profits. One hundred percent of the $10 ticket price will go to the Floyd Christian Youth Foundation.

Morrisette and his company's vice president, Robert Burgen, set up the nonprofit foundation two months ago to help at-risk kids in Floyd County.

"We want to reach out and touch youth who have a bad home life or just feel like outsiders," Morrisette said.

Right now, the foundation has no funds, but its board has a lot of hope for the venture. It's working with the court system, the school system and Floyd Cares, an umbrella organization representing several nonprofits, to identify youth who need "Christian guidance and fellowship."

After finding the target group, Morrisette said the foundation will survey the kids to find out what they need and develop programs for them.

Concert for Christ will kick off at noon and end at 6 p.m. There will be food available for purchase on the grounds. In case of rain, the concert will be postponed.
