Summary: A reminder not to drink and drive.
Durante esta época de celebraciones, es importante recordar un decir muy famoso: "Beber alcohol y conducir no se mezclan". Cada 45 minutos alguien pierde la vida en accidentes automovilísticos relacionados con el alcohol; 32 fatalidades diarias; anualmente aproximadamente 11,773 personas, según lo publicado en las estadísticas del 2008. A pesar de que estas cifras son mejores a las de años anteriores, debido principalmente a estrictas sanciones, y una creciente comprensión por parte del público, de ninguna manera reconfortan a las familias de aquellos que han perdido la vida a manos de un conductor embriagado. Es de señalar que el costo anual debido a este tipo de accidentes sobrepasa los 50 billones de dólares.
En los Estados Unidos, es ilegal conducir un vehiculo si la cantidad de alcohol en la sangre es 0.08% o superior. Debido a que es imposible determinar cuanto alcohol se debe ingerir para alcanzar este limite, el Departamento de Salud recomienda no manejar después de consumir alcohol. Después de consumir alcohol los reflejos de la persona se aminoran, la mente se distrae con facilidad, e impide juzgar correctamente la situaciones a enfrentar. Cuando el alcohol se mezcla con otros factores tales como sueño, o medicamentos, se produce un aletargamiento que hace que se incrementen los riesgos de un accidente.
Las sanciones por manejar embriagado arían de estado a estado, e incluyen la suspensión de la licencia de manejar, clases obligatorias sobre el uso del acochol, y multas de 2000 dólares, o superiores. Conductores de vehículos extremadamente intoxicados responsables de la muerte de otras personas pueden ser enviados a una prisión, después de ser acusados de asesinato.
Durante una actividad social donde se servirá alcohol se debe designar a una persona, la cual no beberá alcohol, y será responsable de conducir el vehiculo de regreso al hogar; en el camino mantenga una distancia prudente de aquellos que están manejando en forma errática, y de inmediato comuníquelo al 911. Si la función social es en su hogar, evite ofrecer alcohol durante las dos ultimas horas de la fiesta, e insista en ofrecer te o café. No permita a sus invitados manejar si se encuentran embriagados. Si es necesario invítelos a dormir en su casa, o envíelos a sus hogares en un taxi.

Driving While Intoxicated

During this holiday season of celebration and parties, it is important to remember the famous quote: "Drinking and driving don't mix." A person dies every 45 minutes in this country from an alcohol related motor vehicle accident. That is 32 people per day and 11,773 persons per year (2008 statistics). While these numbers are actually an improvement from previous years due to stricter penalties and increased public awareness, that is no comfort to those to have lost loved ones due to an alcohol impaired driver. The annual costs associated with alcohol related crashes are more than $50 billion dollars and the long-term effects of injuries are impossible to measure.
In all states and the District of Columbia, it is illegal to drive if your blood alcohol content is 0.08% or greater. Since it is impossible to predict how much alcohol it takes to reach this level, the US Department of Health and Human Services recommends that it is not safe to drive after consuming any alcohol. Just one drink can impair your reflexes, make your mind wander, and cloud your judgment. When alcohol is combined with other factors such as a lack of sleep, or medications that cause drowsiness, the danger increases. Young drivers are at an especially high risk of being involved in a crash when drinking.
Penalties for those arrested for driving under the influence vary from state to state and include license suspension for a period of one month to a year, mandatory classes in alcohol education, and $2000 or more in fines. Those drunk drivers who are extremely intoxicated, cause a crash, or kill someone may receive a prison term and can even be charged with murder. One frightening statistic is that most of those arrested for drunk driving have driven while intoxicated an average of 87 times before being caught.
Some tips on staying safe include:
When attending an event that includes alcohol, choose a person to be the designated driver who agrees to not drink at all. Keep a safe distance away from anyone who is weaving or driving recklessly, and call 911 to report them to the police or highway patrol. If you are hosting a party, stop serving alcohol an hour or two before the end of the party and offer coffee and tea. Do not let your guests drive home if they are intoxicated - call them a taxi or insist that they spend the night.
