Summary: Why texting while driving is dangerous.
Durante un estudio realizado por el Instituto del Transporte de Virginia Tech, se instalaron en las cabinas de algunos camiones cámaras de video por un periodo de 18 meses. La información obtenida reveló que los conductores de vehículos que realizan nvíos de textos telefónicos mientras manejan asumen un riesgo de accidente 23 veces más alto que lo normal. Los resultados demuestran que el enviar mensajes telefónicos mientrasconduce produce una distracción más considerable de lo que se estimaba, y equivalentemente peligrosa como el manejar embriagado. Al momento de los accidentes registrados en el estudio, se pudo constatar que los conductores emplearon 5 segundos en mirar el texto telefónico; 5 segundos a la velocidad de una autopista es suficiente tiempo para cruzar la distancia de una cancha de football.
Es difícil determinar cuantos accidentes vehiculares han sido resultado de la distracción creada por la mensajería o la conversación telefónica. Los departamentos de policía no guardan este tipo de información, y no existe un estudio profundo acerca del asunto. Otro tipo de estudios estiman que cerca de un 80% de los accidentes vehiculares son causados por conductores distraídos. El envío de mensajes telefónicos es un fenómeno nuevo, que ha crecido enormemente en los últimos años. Considérese que durante el mes de diciembre del 2008 fueron enviados alrededor de 110 billones de mensajes. En mayo del 2009, el envío de textos telefónicos recibió atención a nivel nacional debido a que un chofer del transporte publico de la ciudad de Boston produjóun accidente mientras enviaba mensajes a su novia.
El envío de mensajes telefónicos mientras se maneja es ilegal en Virginia y otros 17 estados del país. Por otra parte se ha informado que varios estados tienen legislación pendiente sobre esta materia. En relación a lo anterior, recientemente ha sido presentado un proyecto de ley en el congreso de la nación, que vendría a prohibir la practica señalada anteriormente en todo el país. Tom Dingus, Director del Instituto del Transporte de Virginia Tech ha señalado en relación a los textos telefónicos al conducir : ". . . nunca se debe hacer; debe declarase ilegal". Enviar mensajes telefónicos mientras se conduce es peligroso para los jóvenes, debido a que en la mayoría de los casos no tienen experiencia en conducir un vehiculo. En una encuesta reciente el 21% de los jóvenes consultados han admitido haber enviado mensajes mientras conducían.
Cuando sea necesario hacer una llamada telefónica, o enviar un mensaje de texto, sálgase del camino, detenga el vehiculo y utilice la señalización correspondiente. Protéjase usted y a otros conductores actuando cautelosamente.

Avoid Cell Phones While Driving

In a recent study done by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, video cameras were installed in the cabs of trucks for a period of eighteen months. The data from this research revealed that drivers who texted while driving were 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash. These results showed texting while driving to be much more distracting than previously thought and actually more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. Just before a crash or near crash, drivers were found to spend five seconds looking at their texting device, which is enough time at highway speeds to cover more than the distance of a football field.
It is difficult to determine how many crashes are caused by texting or by talking on a cell phone since police departments do not collect this information and there have been no long-term studies. Some studies have estimated that as many as 80% of traffic accidents are caused bydistracted drivers. Texting is a new phenomenon, which has grown tremendously in the last several years. There were more than 110 billion messages sent just in the month of December of last year. In May of this year the issue received national attention when a trolley car driver in Boston crashed while texting his girlfriend. Texting while driving is illegal In 18 states (including Virginia), and many other states have pending legislation against texting. There has also been a bill introduced in Congress, which would result in a nationwide ban. According to Tom Dingus, Director of the Virginia Tech Institute: "You should never do this. It should be illegal." Texting while driving is especially dangerous for young persons who do not have much driving experience. According to one recent survey, 21% of young drivers have admitted to texting while driving.
If you need to make a phone call or send a text message while driving, pull over and stop. Protect yourself and other drivers by taking the extra time and effort needed to be safe.
