Para Paula Johnson, las clases de inglés que recibió en el Departamento de Educaciónde Adultos de Roanoke han resultado ser de gran utilidad; por una parte le está permitiendo un excelente desenvolvimiento en su trabajo, y le ha ayudado en ir rompiendo gradualmente con la timidez que en muchos casos se acrecienta con las dificultades para comunicarse en el idioma Ingles. En su reciente experiencia como estudiante descubrió que el asistir a clases dos veces a la semana, poder dialogar en Ingles acerca de todas aquellas cosas importantes para los inmigrantes, el compartir con estudiantes de diferentes continentes e idiomas, y el haber sido alumna de la maestra Nancy Steinweg, han resultado ser de gran importancia para su futuro. "El miedo existe" señala, y agrega con gran énfasis " . . . pero sabiendo un poco de Ingles, uno puede desarrollarse mejor, uno adquiere más confianza."
En relación a las próximas clases de Inglés Aimee Clarke, Coordinadora de Inglés Como Segundo Lenguaje de las Escuelas de Roanoke, indicó recientemente que las fechas exactas de inicio de las clases serán publicadas en las próximas semanas, pero adelantó quese iniciaran en septiembre. Las clases vespertinas se realizaran en la escuela Breckinridge, y en la escuela Patrick Henry, los días lunes y miércoles de 6:30 a 8:30 de la noche, y se dividirán en cuatro niveles: alfabetización, principiante, intermedio, y avanzado. Cada estudiante será evaluado al inicio de la primera clase, y así ser destinado a la clase del nivel correspondiente. Este año las matriculas se mantendrán abiertas hasta el momento en que se alcance el numero máximo de la clase, es decir 20 alumnos por cada nivel. Inmediatamente después se abrirá una lista de espera. En su mensaje la señora Clark insistió en que la asistencia regular a las clases es extremadamente importante en el progreso del aprendizaje. Las clases son gratuitas,pero se debe cancelar el texto a ser utilizado. Por otra parte, se ofrecerán clases durante las mañanas en el Centro de Educación de Adultos ubicado en la Avenida Reserve, las cuales se impartirán días lunes y miércoles de 9 a 11 de la mañana. El nivel de esta clase dependerá del conocimiento del Inglés de los estudiantes que se matriculen. Posteriormente la señora Clarke señalo que la organización Literacy Volunteers ofrecerá clases en la escuela Jackson Middle School los días lunes y jueves de 6:30 de la tarde a 8:30 de la noche. Estas clases se iniciarán el día 10 de septiembre, y solamente se ofrecerán en dos niveles: principiante, y avanzado.

For Paula Johnson, the English classes she received through the Roanoke City Schools Adult Education program have been of great benefit to her. It has allowed her good job performance and helped her to gradually overcome a shyness, which often develops among immigrants when they are unable to communicate in English. In her recent experience as a student, she discovered that going to classes twice a week, entering the classroom, being able to interact with other students in English about matters of importance to immigrants, sharing with students from different continents and languages, and being taught by Nancy Steinweg have all been of great importance to her life. "The fear exists" Paula said and, with great emphasis, she added: ". . . by knowing a little bit of English you can make progress and acquire more confidence."
In regard to upcoming English classes, Aimee Clarke, Coordinator of English as a Second Language for the Roanoke City Schools, recently indicated that the exact date of the beginning of classes will be published in the next couple of weeks. These classes will begin in September. The evening classes will take place in Breckinridge Middle School and Patrick Henry High School Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm and they will be divided into four different levels: literacy, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each student will be assessed on the first night to determine his or her appropriate level. This year the classes will be open until they are filled (approximately 20 students per level) and a waiting list will be started. Ms. Clarke emphasizes that regular attendance is very important for students to make progress. The classes are free, but there will be a small book fee.
There will also be classes offered during the mornings at the Adult Education Office on Reserve Avenue on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. The level will depend on the students who attend. Ms. Clarke has also indicated that the Literacy Volunteers will be offering classes in Jackson Middle School on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm.
