Summary: An overview of the history of presidential inaugurations.
El día 20 de enero del año 2009, fecha del inicio de la presidencia del nuevo presidente de los Estados Unidos de Norte América Barack Obama se aproxima rápidamente, cuyo lema es "Renovando la Promesa Americana."
La constitución de los Estados Unidos de Norte América indica que un presidente electo no puede iniciar su mandato oficialmente, hasta que no cumpla con el siguiente juramento "Yo solemnemente juro (o afirmo) que ejecutareé fielmente las responsabilidades del presidente de los Estados Unidos y conservaré, protegeré, y defenderé la constitución de los Estados Unidos hasta donde me sea posible".
La ceremonia se llevará a cabo a las doce del día en las gradas del lado oeste del Capitolio en Washington D.C., y el juramento presidencial será administrado por el Jefe de Justicia de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos John Roberts. Durante este mismo día jurará como Vice Presidente Joseph Biden.
La inauguración del primer presidente Norte Americano George Washington se realizó en la ciudad de Nueva York en abril de 1789. En 1801 Washington D.C. se transformo en la capital federal y el primer presidente en celebrar su inauguración en dicha ciudad fue Thomas Jefferson.
Hasta el año 1937 el día de la inauguración presidencial era el 4 de marzo; la enmienda constitucional numero 20 cambio la ceremonia a la fecha actual, día 20 de enero. La historia por otra parte señala que las inauguraciones presidencial de William Howard Taft en 1909 y Ronald Reagan en 1985 se celebraron en lugares interiores debido a la inclemencia del invierno. En dos ocasiones, durante la guerra de 1812 y durante la segunda guerra mundial, obligó a realizar las ceremonias de juramento presidencial fuera de Washington D.C.
El presidente usualmente hace su juramento sobre una biblia, y este año el juramento del presidente electo Barack Obama se realizara sobre la biblia de Abraham Lincoln , la cual no ha sido utilizada anteriormente en este tipo de ceremonias, con la excepción de su propio juramento en 1861.
Inmediatamente después del juramento presidencial se interpretaran los himnos correspondientes los que incluyen "Hail to the Chief" seguidos por 21 salvas de artillería, como una forma de recordar que el presidente es el General en Jefe de las fuerzas armadas. Posteriormente, el nuevo presidente realizaráun discurso inaugural, seguido por un desfile por la avenida Pennsylvania, desde el Capitolio hasta la Casa Blanca.
Este año se anticipa que la inauguración presidencial tendrá un carácter histórico debido a que el presidente electo Barack Obama es la primera persona de origen afro-americano elegida presidente de la nación. Se ha anticipado que la cantidad de participantes en la inauguración presidencial puede alcanzar cinco millones; de ser así se convertiría en el acto público más grande de la historia del país. Este interés en participar se debe principalmente a que muchos quieren ser testigos, y celebrar el inicio de una nueva era en el país. Se espera que muchos hispano-americanos se sumaran a la celebración, especialmente aquellos que apoyaron al entonces candidato Barack Obama.

"Renewing America's Promise"

January 20, 2009, the date of the inauguration of the next president of the United States Barack Obama, will soon be here and the theme is "Renewing America's Promise." The United States Constitution orders that a president-elect cannot officially take office until they make the following oath: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." The ceremony will take place at noon on the steps of the United States Capitol Building's west front in Washington, D.C. and the oath will be administered by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John Roberts. Vice President-elect Joseph Biden will also be sworn in on this day.
The inauguration of the first US president, George Washington, was held in New York City in April 1789. In 1801, Washington, D.C. became the official federal capital and Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be sworn in there.
Inauguration Day was held on March 4th until 1937, when the Twentieth Amendment to the US Constitution changed the date to January 20th. History also records that the inaugurations of William Howard Taft in 1909 and Ronald Reagan in 1985 had to be moved indoors due to extreme winter weather. The War of 1812 and World War II forced two inaugurations to be held at other locations in Washington, D.C.
The president usually takes the oath on a Bible and this year it will be Abraham Lincoln's bible that Barack Obama will use, the first to do so since Lincoln in 1861. After the oath, the bands play "Hail to the Chief" and there is a 21-gun salute from the military, remembering that the president is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. There is also an inaugural speech by the new president and a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House.
This year's inauguration promises to be historic in that Barack Obama is the first African-American to be elected president and the crowds could go as high as five million, the largest single gathering in American history as people come to witness and celebrate the beginning of a new era in this country. Many Hispanics will be among the crowd as their support and votes helped him win the election.
