En estos días los canales de televisión están entregando constantemente información acerca del cambio que ocurrirá el día 17 de febrero del año 2009, fecha en la cual toda las transmisiones de televisión pasarán a ser de tipo digital. Este cambio obedece a una ley.
Si usted tiene un televisor antiguo sin servicio de cable o satélite usted no tendrá recepción hasta que no obtenga una caja de conversión digital.
En la actualidad las estaciones de televisión están transmitiendo en forma digital y en forma análoga. A partir del 17 de febrero del 2009, todas las transmisiones serán exclusivamente digitales.
Este nuevo avance tecnológico entregará una mejor imagen, un sonido de mejor calidad, y nuevas opciones. Este servicio digital continuará siendo gratuito a través del uso de una antena.
En aquellos hogares en los cuales los televisores están conectados al servicio de cable, satélite u otros servicios de televisión pagados, estos no serán afectados y no será necesario tomar medidas. Si usted utiliza un televisor que requiere una antena, necesitara determinar si este ya trae un botón que le permite cambiarlo al sistema digital. Para determinar lo anterior lea el manual del televisor, o revise si este tiene inscritas las siglas "ATSC"; si no logra encontrar la información consulte en la tienda en donde compró el televisor.
Si su televisor tiene el sistema digital usted no necesita comprar la caja de conversión digital, pero tendrá que verificar que la antena que esta usando es adecuada. Si su televisor no tiene un sistema digital, y usted no desea comprar un televisor digital, usted tendrá que obtener e instalar una caja de conversión digital. El costo de la caja varia entre los precios de 40 a 70 dolares por unidad, y puede ser obtenida en tiendas que venden productos electrónicos tales como "Best Buy" o "Radio Shack."
Recuerde que cada televisor necesita su propia caja. Por otra parte, se ha indicado que el gobierno esta entregando dos cupones de 40 dolares cada uno por cada hogar, con el proposito de aliviar el costo. Estos cupones deben ser usados dentro de un plazo de 90 días y solo pueden ser usados para comprar una caja de conversión digital. Digital Television

There is a lot of information on television these days about the change to all digital television that will happen on February 17, 2009. This change is required by law and if you have an older television set and do not have cable or satellite service you will not be able to receive a television signal without obtaining a converter box.
Television stations today are sending their information both by digital and by the old system known as "analog." After February 17th, 2009 it will only be sent by digital. This new and improved technology provides a better picture, better sound quality and many more options. This service will still be free to the public through the use of an antenna.
If all the television sets in your home are connected to cable, satellite, or other paid tv services you will not be affected and you do not need to take any action. If you watch a television that uses an antenna, you will need to determine if the television has a digital tuner built into it. Check the manual, look on the television for the letters "ATSC" or ask at the store where you bought the television. If your television has a built in digital tuner you do not have to purchase a converter box but you will need to check your antenna. If your current television does not have a built in digital tuner and you do not want to buy a new digital television, you will need to purchase and install a converter box. These boxes cost between $40 and $70 each and can be purchased now at retail electronics stores such as "Best Buy" and "Radio Shack." Each television will require a box and the government is giving out two free $40 coupons to each household to help with the cost. The coupons must be used within ninety days and cannot be used for anything except the converter boxes. Call 1-888-DTV-2009 or go the internet at www.dtv2009.gov to apply for the coupons. It is also possible that you may need to change your antenna. Go to www.antennaweb.org and type in your address and zip code to find what type of antenna will be required in your area to receive free digital programming or check with a local electronics store.
