Octubre: Conciencia contra la violencia domestica

Las familias de origen latino-americano al verse en vueltas en situaciones de violencia domestica tienden a atribuirlas a razones culturales; es el hombre quien decide, y se asegura que se cumplan sus mandatos, para ello llega a adjudicarse el derecho a usar la violencia física, verbal, y emocional. El rol de la esposa es el de guardar silencio; lo que suceda al interior de su hogar es vida privada que no tolera intromisión.
Lo cierto es, argumentan expertos legales, la violencia domestica es intolerable en cualquiera de sus formas, y sin importar en donde ocurra. La vida privada de una familia no puede existir sin la seguridad e integridad física y el derecho a la vida de todos sus miembros. Por otra parte, es necesario reconocer que las situaciones de violencia domestica se ven agravadas debido a la presencia del alcohol, drogas, problemas financieros, y en gran medida debido a enfermedades mentales.
Es importante señalar que los episodios de violencia domestica en la mayoría de los casos después que se han desencadenado tienden a ser cada vez más violentos y frecuentes a pesar de las promesas del causante de que no volverán a repetirse. Lo más probable es que si no se han tomado medidas inmediatas como las de informar a las autoridades, ya sea la policía, el magistrado o trabajadoras sociales, estos episodios volverán a ocurrir poniendo a la victima cada vez en una situación aun más peligrosa. Es de recordar que la violencia domestica no solo son golpes; también se manifiesta en gritos, insultos, celos descontrolados, y también incluyen la privación de la alimentación y medicinas a los ancianos, amenazas golpes y encierro de los menores, y el no permitirles ir a la escuela. En situaciones en que la violencia domestica ha escalado, es aconsejable que la victima obtenga rápidamente asistencia en un albergue de emergencia, y se recomienda que lo haga cuando el victimario este fuera de la casa. En el caso de familias con niños, es recomendable que la victima se refugié con ellos. Si la victima ha sido notificada por un juez que la custodia de los menores no le pertenece, no debe sacarlos del hogar. Es recomendable que la persona lleve consigo solo lo esencial: documentos y ropa necesaria. Si no es posible ir en busca de resguardo, se debe hacer todo lo posible por llamar a la policía, o por ultimo ponerse en contacto con una persona de confianza la cual pueda presentar la demanda correspondiente. Recuerde que en cada situación de violencia domestica siempre existen recursos a los cuales la victima puede recurrir tan pronto lo sea posible.

October -- Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Recently Sammi Rader, coordinator of the program Sabrina's Place in the city of Roanoke, said: "Domestic violence is an intentional pattern of abusive behaviors that impacts everyone. It is essential for the professionals and citizens of our community to recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to become more involved." When families of Latin American origin find themselves involved in situations of domestic violence they often have the tendency to blame the problems on cultural reasons; men are believed to be the ones who should make decisions and see that they are carried out including the perceived right to use physical, verbal, and emotional violence. The role of the wife is seen as keeping silent; what happens inside the home is private and not subject to outside interference. Legal experts argue that domestic violence is intolerable in any of its forms, no matter where it happens. The private life of a family cannot exist without physical safety and the right to life for all its' members. It is also necessary to recognize that domestic violence is aggravated by alcohol, drugs, financial problems, and mental illness.
It is important to note that in most cases domestic violence incidents tend to increase in intensity and severity even though the abuser promises that it will not happen again. The most probable outcome is that if immediate measures are not taken such as informing the authorities (police, magistrate, or social workers) these episodes will happen again, putting the victim in a more dangerous situation each time. Domestic violence is not only physical blows but can also include yelling, insults, uncontrollable jealousy, the withholding of food and medicine to the elderly, and threats and isolation of minors, including keeping them from going to school. In situations where domestic violence has escalated, it is recommended that the victim obtain rapid assistance in an emergency shelter to leave when the abuser is not at home. In cases of families with children, it is recommended that the victim take refuge with the minors unless there is a court order which gives custody to the abuser. Finally, it is recommended that the victim take only the essentials: documents and clothing. If it is not possible to get to a shelter, there needs to be an effort to call the police or at least contact a trusted person who can make the required complaint to the authorities. Remember that in every situation of domestic violence there always exist resources for those who are being abused.
