Summary: This year's Latino Festival will be Oct. 12 in Elmwood Park, and the Spanish-language stargazing by the Roanoke Valley Astronomical Society will be Oct. 6.
Es Octubre y como es tradicional en estos últimos años, es tiempo de celebrar el Festival Latino de Roanoke. Este quinto festival que se realizará el día domingo 12 de octubre en Elmwood Park, y se iniciará a las 12 del día para finalizar a las 6 de la tarde. De acuerdo a lo que se ha logrado saber, se espera una concurrencia mayor a la de los años previos, particularmente debido al éxito de los festivales anteriores, lo que por su parte le ha brindado a esta celebración, el reconocimiento de innumerables organizaciones, incluyendose la industria y el comercio del Valle de Roanoke, todos lo que ven en este festival una representación autentica del folklore, la cultura, y el arte latino americano. El Festival Latino de Roanoke desde sus inicios se ha caracterizado por su música, la participación de los diferentes países de Norte, Centro y Sur América, la participación de grupos cívicos, y entre ellos diferentes iglesias, pero especialmente la participación de miles de personas que se reúnen anualmente a deleitarse de las comidas típicas de América Latina y una serie de actividades.
El Festival Latino es organizado anualmente por la organización comunitaria "HACIENDA," y es dirigido por Yolanda Puyana, quien recientemente ha informado que hasta la fecha han anunciado su participación los países de Colombia, Cuba , Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela y Perú. Por otra parte se ha dejado saber que este año, el día del festival se iniciará
con la realización de la primera Carrera Atlética Hispana de Roanoke. Este evento se iniciará a las 7 de la mañana en Elmwood Park, y tendrá un recorrido de cinco millas y media que llevará a los participantes a la cúspide de Mill Mountain y de regreso a la meta final que estará ubicada en la Biblioteca Central de Roanoke en calle Jefferson. Esta carrera atlética cuenta con un premio de $300 dolares para la ganadora de la categoría femenina y un premio similar al ganador de la categoría masculina. La ceremonia de entrega de premios llevará a cabo durante la realización del Festival Latino.
Los organizadores del festival señalaron recientemente que aun queda tiempo para la inscripción y compra de mesas, las cuales están disponibles a todas aquellas personas que deseen exhibir cerámica, arte, productos comerciales, promover una organización, o realizar venta de comida. Las personas interesadas en reservar mesas deben comunicarse con Cynthia Cardona llamando al teléfono (540) 467-4249. Las personas, grupos artísticos, u organizaciones interesadas en el programa artístico del festival pueden comunicarse con Claudia de Franco, llamando al teléfono (540) 816-9097. Aquellas personas que deseen información en general, deseen contribuir como voluntarios o hacer donaciones, pueden comunicarse con Yolanda Puyana llamando al teléfono (540) 309-5053. Finalmente, los organizadores del festival desean insistir en que el Festival Latino es un evento sin fines de lucro y cuya realización es ejecutada por voluntarios, por lo que se invita a todo el publico del Valle de Roanoke a contribuir con sus servicios voluntarios antes, durante, y al cierre del festival.

2008 Latino Festival
Prepare yourself for some latin fun

It is now October and in keeping with a new tradition that began several years ago, it is time to celebrate the Latino Festival of Roanoke. This fifth festival will take place on Sunday, October 12th in Elmwood Park beginning at noon and continuing until 6 p.m. According to publicized information, there is an expectation of greater participation this year due to the success of previous festivals that have brought recognition from many organizations including industry and commerce in the Roanoke Valley, all of which see in this Festival an authentic representation of the folklore, culture, and art of Latin America.
The Latino Festival has, from the beginning, been characterized by its music and the participation of different countries from North, Central, and South America, and also by the participation of civic groups including churches, but mainly by the presence of thousands of people who annually get together to enjoy typical Latin American activities and foods.
The Latino Festival is organized every year by the community organization "HACIENDA" and is directed by Yolanda Puyana who recently has announced the participation of the following countries: Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela, and Peru. More countries are expected to be announced before the Festival. In addition, it has been reported that this year the Latino Festival will begin with the first Hispanic 5K athletic run in Roanoke that will go to the top of Mill Mountain and back to the finish line located at the main branch of the Roanoke public library on Jefferson Street. This run will have a purse of $300 for the male and female winners and a awards ceremony will be conducted during the Festival.
The organizers of the Latino Festival have recently noted that there is still time to register for a table at the Festival and they are available to anyone who wants to exhibit crafts, art, and commercial items; to promote an organization or offer education information; or to sell food items. Those interested in table reservations should call Cynthia Cardona at (540) 467-4249.
Persons or groups interested in the artistic program of the Festival should call Claudia de Franko at (540) 816-9097. Those who need general information or wish to volunteer or make donations should call Yolanda Puyana at (540) 309-5053. Finally, the organizers of the Festival reiterate that it is a non-profit event which is staffed solely by volunteers and invite everyone to participate and contribute their time before, during, and after the Festival.
Reminder: The Members of the Roanoke Valley Astronomical Society will provide telescopes for you to look at amazing sights. This event will take place on Monday, October 6th from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the lawn of the Williamson Road Public Library. This event is free, and everyone of all ages is invited.
