La importancia de participación cívica

Summary: Hispanics are urged to become active in their community by joining civic groups and volunteer organizations.
Entre la comunidad hispana en general, ya sea en los barrios latinos de las grandes ciudades o en las esparcidas por las zonas rurales, existe una considerable baja participación de sus miembros en la vida cívico-social de sus localidades.
Debido a esto, importantes asuntos que conciernen y transforman diariamente nuestras comunidades pasan desapercibidos. Hay una escasa participación de latinos en sucesos que tienen un diario impacto en la vida de las comunidades en general. Esta baja participación nuestra no nos favorece en forma alguna.
¿Que podemos hacer para mejorar esto?
Hay en este país oportunidades a "manos llenas" de cientos y miles de organizaciones e instituciones que constantemente están implementando programas que se llevan a cabo sólo gracias a un elemento vital que es la participación de sus ciudadanos.
Estas personas que muestran preocupación por sus comunidades, están concientes de que su trabajo es indispensable y determinante para lograr cumplir con metas o una misión determinada.
Debemos participar más de nosotros, los latinos de Roanoke. Para colaborar con la ciudad y también para tomar los pasos necesarios y lograr tener una comunidad más organizada y representativa. Se necesita que los hispanos de Roanoke se destaquen como individuos que estén informados y que se concientizen de que lo que pasa en sus comunidades les afecta directa o indirectamente a ellos y a sus familias.
Tenemos también la obligación de conocer aún sea de manera general, como funcionan los sistemas en un nuevo país, de una nueva ciudad. Educar a los demás sobre estos importantes aspectos. Conocer la formación y la historia del lugar donde residimos es importante también porque nos ayuda a entenderlo y asimilarlo más facilmente.
Debemos educarnos y educar a nuestros hijos sobre el lugar donde vivimos. Saber lo que está pasando, estar más y mejor informados.
Al estar mejor informados podremos planear y dar los siguientes pasos. En Roanoke hay actividades organizadas por la ciudad y por grupos y organizaciones que se preocupan de mejorar la calidad de vida todos nosotros.
Días de voluntariado, días de limpieza, ferias de salud, clínicas dentales, eventos cívico/culturales, etc., son sólo algunas de las oportunidades para que usted participe de estos proyectos cívicos, educativos, sociales o culturales que se llevan a cabo en nuestra ciudad y que le invitan a participar.

Our civic participation is important and neccesary
In general and within the hispanic communities, the ones in the big cities, and the others settled in the rural areas, a considerable low participation of their members is very noticeable in matters of the civic and social life of their localities. Important issues of concern and events that shape all communities and have a daily impact in our lives, are out of touch for many Hispanics. This is something that doesn't help us in any way.
What can we do to help ?
There are in this country plenty of opportunities to take action. Hundreds and thousands of organizations, institutions are implementing diverse programs thanks to a vital component that is an active participation of citizens during the process. These people that show concern for their communities are fully aware of the importance of their participation. They know that their work is indispensable in order to accomplish their goals and their mission.
In Roanoke we need more Latinos in the civic and social arenas. We need to colaborate with and for the city as well as for our community. We need to take the neccesary steps to achieve a more organized and representative Hispanic community. We need that Latinos in Roanoke to stand out as better informed residents and also aware of what's happening in the city. This happenings affect directly or undirectly their lives and their family's too. We have the obligation of knowing how the systems work in the country and our new city of residence; we need to educate others about these important aspects. Also, by knowing and studying the formation and the history of the place where we live, it will can help us to understand it better, and to assimilate it more easilly. We have to educate ourselves and educate our children about the place where we live. Knowing what is happening, and be more and better informed.
By being better informed, we can plan and take the next steps. In Roanoke, we have all kind of activities organized by the city and by groups and organizations that are working to improve the quality of life of all of us. Volunteer work, cleaning days, health fairs, dental clinics, cultural and social events are just some of the opportunities for you to participate of this projects. Regular civic, educational, social or cultural activities are planned and organized in our city and they're all open for you.
