Iglesias continúan su labor social

Summary: More than 15 churches in and around the Roanoke Valley offer Spanish-language services.
Sabemos que en los últimos cinco años un gran número de inmigrantes continúan llegando a trabajar y vivir en Virginia. Muchos de ellos lo hacen sólo durante específicas epocas agrícolas del año.
Ellos son los trabajadores del campo, los migrantes hispanos que trabajan plantando y cosechando productos que consumiremos más adelante en nuestro supermercado local.
En Roanoke y en los condados adyacentes se calcula que existen aporoximadamente 12.000 a 15.000 migrantes que en su mayoría provienen de México y países de Centroamérica; predominantemente Honduras y El Salvador.
Algunos se regresan, pero la mayoría se quedan aquí y la mayoría de estos últimos son hombres que no pudieron traer a la familia.
Siendo muchas las necesidades de estos trabajadores, ya sean sociales y materials o la de adaptación cultural, están también las de tipo sicológico y espirtual que empujan a congregaciones religiosas a crear programas de ayuda al inmigrante.
Una de ellas es la Diócesis Católica de Richmond y su Migrant Farmworker Ministry.
Este grupo trata de cubrir algunas de las nesidades del inmigrante trabajando con otras iglesias y en coordinación con agencias de trabajo social para llevar su valiosa ayuda.
Existen campamentos hasta de 500 migrantes los cuales visitan periódicamente.
Algunos de los servicios que los trabajadores reciben de este ministerio son: útiles y prácticos recursos informativos, asistencia en caso de emergencias, una programación semanal en la radio que se ofrece en español, celebración de cultos religiosos, orientación sobre agencias de trabajo social y ayuda en la celebración de días festivos.
Es este ministerio como otros de varias iglesias en el area un apoyo que el hispano recibe agradecido y confiado.
Estas iglesias están realizando una labor social que agradece la comunidad hispana de Virginia y de la cual usted puede participar. Ellos recrutan voluntarios en las diferentes partes del estado para cumplir con su misión.
También usted, en su iglesia, puede participar en uno, o bien empezar un nuevo ministerio. Estos centros religiosos continúan abriendo sus puertas al inmigrante, habiendo aproximadamente en Roanoke unas 15 iglesias de diferente denominación que cuentan con ministerios hispanos, algunas de ellas con programas de instrucción de inglés como segundo idioma.

Religious ministries continue with their social and humanitarian work
We're all aware that in the present and during the past five years, a large number of immigrants have arrived to work and live in Virginia. Many of these people are here only during the different annual farming seasons. They are the farm workers, the Hispanic immigrants planting and harvesting products that we eventually will purchase at our local supermarket.
It is estimated that in Roanoke and adjacent counties, there are approximately 12,000 to 15,000 farm workers from México and Central American countries, predominantly Honduras and El Salvador.
Some of them return home, but the vast majority stay here, most of them being men who couldn't bring their families with them.
Besides the expected social and material needs of these people, we have important issues such as cultural adaptation, and also psychological and spiritual assistance, that have moved some churches to create special programs for immigrants. One of them is Catholic Diocese of Richmond and its Office of Migrant Ministry. This group is trying to cover some of these workers needs, and works in coordination with other churches and social services agencies with the purpose of bringing their valuable assistance to the farms. Scattered across the state, there are farmer workers camps, some of them with 500 people living in them.
Some of the services received from this ministry are: useful and practical informative resources, assistance in case of emergencies, support to a weekly radio program in Spanish, referral services to other agencies, pastoral visitations to camp sites, hospitals and jails, and helping with the organization of religious services, and the celebration of holidays and cultural occasions.
This ministry, along with those from other denominations, offers support that the Hispanic migrant receives with gratefulness and trust.
These churches are conducting a social and humanitarian task that is highly appreciated by the Hispanic community in Virginia. You can also can be part of these causes and be a volunteer. The diocese always needs people to work in different parts of the state.
You, as a Hispanic/Latino who attends church, can also be part of a ministry or maybe start a new one. Religious centers continue opening doors to immigrants in the Roanoke area; already more then 15 churches of diverse denomination offer Spanish services and Hispanic ministries, some of them with English as a Second Language instruction programs.

We as Hispanics are fully aware of these migrants' realities and we know that this help is much needed. It's social and humanitarian aid that identifies their problems, improves their living conditions and also alleviates the social and emotional isolation in which many of these people live.
