Bedford to retest residential wells near the city's leaking landfill
The City of Bedford will retest on Wednesday the residential wells of Bedford County residents who live near the city's closed, leaking landfill on the eastern end of the city.
The landfill, which operated from the 1960s until 1994, is leaking groundwater contamination onto private property into a Bedford County neighborhood and a 91-acre farm.
Residents who live on Bell Town and Draper Roads, which border the landfill, have complained since March that the city isn't working fast enough to resolve the contamination problem. Six homes in the neighborhood have drinking water that show some signs of contaminants. Two of the homes are served by a well that has contamination levels that exceed federal safe drinking water standards. The city has installed a filter on the well and says the water is safe to drink.
City officials have said they're working with the state's Department of Environmental Quality to find a solution. The city filed an Assessment of Corrective Measures report with the DEQ last week. The city is waiting for a response from DEQ before it moves forward.
Residents can notify the city to get their well tested by calling the Bedford City Manager's office at 587-6001 or the Department of Public Works at 587-6084.
