Have You Heard?
The Foundation of Roanoke Valley has approved a grant for the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley in the amount of $1,000 from the V. Diane Kelly Fund for Forgotten Victims and the executive director's discretionary fund. These funds will support a weeklong day camp for children in kindergarten through fifth grade who participate in the association's Forgotten Victims skills-building groups for victims of domestic violence.

The Cave Spring Lions Club has elected the following officers for the July 1, 2004-July 1, 2005 term: John Ewald, president; Lynn Slonaker, first vice president; Sophia Motica, second vice president; Carlton Saul, secretary; Jim Newman, treasurer; Dewey Monger, assistant treasurer; Chuck Jordan, tail twister; Gabe Voss, lion tamer; Dick Decker, chaplain; Hank Gleixner, old monarch.

Charlotte Yuille-Barnes, an eight-year veteran of the IBM Company, has received the Power of One Leadership Award. The award recognizes individuals who epitomize the operating principles of ibm.com, which include a demonstration of leadership, value for customers and Team IBM, an ability to lead change and achievement of exceptional business results. Each quarter, only two awards are presented in each geography, which includes the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe. In her third year as an advisory sales specialist on the IBM Technical Education Services Team, covering the financial sector, Yuille-Barnes has exceeded her revenue objective each year.
Yuille-Barnes, an Atlanta resident, is the daughter of Mural and Rachel Yuille of Northwest Roanoke. She is a 1980 graduate of William Fleming High School.
CAMPUS
Colette Fu, of Roanoke, and Michelle Amos, daughter of Bobby and Wanda Amos of Roanoke, were awarded 2004 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowships. Fu won $6,000 for her work with photography. Amos, a rising senior at Virginia Commonwealth University and a 2000 graduate of Cave Spring High School, won $2,000 for her work with sculpture.

Melanie Moore, a student at University of South Carolina, has been inducted into the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Society, an undergraduate honor society. In addition to a high grade point average, the society requires more than 50 percent of the student's coursework to be in the liberal arts and sciences at an advanced level. Moore is from Roanoke.

Kelly Minton, a rising senior at the University of Mary Washington, has been inducted into Chi Beta Phi, a national science honorary; the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Phi Sigma, an honor society that recognizes academic achievement. Minton, daughter of Roland and Jan Minton of Salem, is a 2002 graduate of Salem High School.

Wes Hall, a rising junior at Hampden-Sydney College, has completed a five-week internship in Washington with Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Roanoke. Hall, son of Ken and Susie Hall of Roanoke County, is a 2002 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
MILITARY
Army Sgt. 1st Class Steven Pullins, a 1983 graduate of William Fleming High School, has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. The medal is awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Army, have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service. Pullins is a liaison recruiter with the Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
