They are shaping up while sitting down
The chair dancers at Warm Hearth stretch, perform yoga and pilates and lift weights while seated on the edge of cushioned, armless metal chairs.
Chair dancing may be easy on the knees, but it's still a workout. "Just because it's on a chair doesn't mean you can't break a sweat," said Elizabeth Wukits, 65, who tried the class for the first time Thursday at Warm Hearth Village, where the class is offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Caring for her granddaughter usually prevents Wukits from attending regularly, so she works out to step-aerobics videos at home and walks the village trails every day.
Instructors Carla Sleight and Mary Keffer use different videotapes of chair dancing exercises each class. Dancers begin with several minutes of warm-up stretching - shoulder rolls, body rotations, leg circles - all while seated on the edge of cushioned, armless metal chairs. Most tapes are geared toward senior citizens and include chair yoga and pilates, too. Classes incorporate weight-lifting as well as the usual aerobic leg lifts and arm bends.
"It would be difficult to use weights and stand up - I wouldn't want to be standing too long," said Muriel Jacobson, who turns 90 in a few weeks. She also walks the village's trails and began taking the chair dancing class when she moved to Warm Hearth three years ago.
"My coordination was good before, but now I'm certainly not losing it," she said. "What's so good about the class is that you feel better all over."
Jeanette Sylvester, 85, has been attending the biweekly class for five years and takes another exercise class four days a week. She said a recent bone density test showed improvement.
"I make myself do it. I like to get out every day, see people, chat a little bit and exercise, too," she said. She and other class members walk from their apartments to the Karr Activity Center for class.
Sleight does the workout along with the residents. She said that when residents tell her they are feeling bad, the first thing she asks is, "Have you exercised today?"
Wukits said exercise keeps her young and mentally and physically fit. "The ones who don't come out are the ones who are falling," she said.
