Gertrude C. (Gertie) Hale, 99, of Moneta, Va., passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Hale; her twin sister, Goldie R. Cheek; brother, Oscar T. Cheek; and recently her sister, Thelma C. Whorley.Gertie was a lifelong member of Parrish Chapel United Methodist Church. She retired from Tom's Potato Chips with over 40 years of service.She is survived by her niece, Angie Jones and husband, Forrest; a cousin, Doris Roberts; and a nephew, Donald Hale and his wife, Jennie.Gertie firmly believed the streets of Heaven are paved with gold and was looking forward to going there. She loved flowers, her beloved pet, Cocoa, and fiddle and banjo music. She never met a stranger and loved to laugh.The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at Parrish Chapel United Methodist Church, 10000 Stewartsville Road, Vinton, VA 24179. Pastor Mickey White will officiate and interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 29, 2016. Betty Jean Moore, 83, a devoted and loving mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, August 19, 2016. She is now in heaven with her two sons, Ricky Messer who passed away in February, 1988 and Billy Messer who passed away in July, 2016. She is also preceded by her mother and father, Nettie and Charlie Altice; and brother, Charles Altice.Betty is survived by daughters, Sharon Howard and Terry Hickson; sons, Barry Messer, Henry Criner and wife Tracy, Jeffrey Criner and girlfriend Terry Francisco; granddaughters, Stephanie Smith and husband Rusty and Corey Criner; grandsons, Eddie Moore, Patrick Wheeler, and Lucas Criner; great-granddaughter, Nicolle Smith; great-grandsons, Anthony Bradshaw and Hunter Smith; and great-great-granddaughter, Izabelle Len Smith. She also leaves behind her sister, Helen Garrett; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special little dog, Paco.Betty enjoyed spending time with her family crabbing in the Outer Banks, playing bingo, and connecting with family and friends on Facebook. She especially enjoyed playing competitive games of Yahtzee with her children, where she still holds the highest score.A Celebration of life will be scheduled at a future date for family and friends.
