Roanoke is the largest metropolitan area in Southwest Virginia, which is defined by the Blue Ridge Mountains. With Richmond and Virginia Beach to the east and Northern Virginia above us, the valleys of Roanoke and New River are full of natural beauty and inspire a quieter pace than the other major cities of Virginia. Still, the area is home to Virginia Tech, one of the country's leading research institutions, as well as other liberal arts campuses that infuse the area with energy and ideas. Investment in the arts is a high priority for Southwest Virginia residents, with many outstanding private galleries across the region and a new Art Museum of Western Virginia under construction in downtown Roanoke.

Although historically a railroad town, Roanoke's business and social culture have become increasingly high-tech, with wireless zones in many places around town and a bio-med research park underway. The downtown Roanoke area has many thriving restaurants and nightclubs, as well as a variety of local shops and a farmer's market every day. Just outside of Roanoke you can find a well-managed mix of suburban developments with farmland all with a view of the surrounding mountains.
