Paper taps managing editor
Michael Stowe has worked at The Roanoke Times as an editor and writer for over 13 years.
Michael Stowe was named Tuesday as managing editor of The Roanoke Times, moving into the position from the job of assistant managing editor for presentation at the newspaper.
Stowe, 37, fills a job formerly held by Carole Tarrant, who succeeded Mike Riley as editor in May.
As managing editor, Stowe will supervise most day-to-day issues in the newsroom and help develop long-term strategy to increase readership.
"Michael draws on a deep knowledge of the region and this newspaper's role in it," Tarrant said.
"He also brings energy to looking at our business in new ways. He'll use his experience in the print newsroom as the foundation for exploring new formats and reaching more readers."
Those new formats focus on reaching online readers through the newspaper's Web site, roanoke.com.
Stowe has worked at the newspaper as an editor and writer for more than 13 years, and most recently supervised the paper's design, photography, graphics and copy editing teams.
Stowe previously served as sports editor, New River Valley bureau chief and metro editor.
Stowe, who grew up in the Henry County community of Ridgeway, is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. He previously worked as an editor at the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
"I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to lead such a talented group of journalists," Stowe said.
"This is an exciting time for our company as we continue to evolve into a 24-hour news operation. It's going to take creative thinking by all of us to keep the newspaper strong while nurturing the growth of roanoke.com."
The Roanoke Times and roanoke.com are owned by Landmark Communications. The newspaper is distributed across 19 counties and, as of March 31, has an average weekday circulation of 94,000 and a Sunday circulation of 104,000.
