ARCHITECTURE
- Adam Cohen, co-founder of Structures Design Build, has received certification from the Passivhaus Institute in Germany as a Certified European Passivhaus Planner.
EDUCATION
- Dr. Earl Gaughan has joined the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech as a clinical professor of large animal surgery in the department of large animal clinical sci-ences. Dr. Katie Boes has joined the faculty as a clinical instructor of clinical pathology in the department of biomedical sciences and pathobiology.
- Roland Walters Jr., director of the career services office at Ferrum College, is the 2011 recipient of the Leadership & Service Award from the College of Education at Penn State University.
- Charles Cosmato has been appointed director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Radford University.
- Marissa Rylander, an associate professor jointly appointed in the mechanical engineering department and the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences at Virginia Tech, is the recipient of the 2012 Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Award.
- Scott Weimer has been named director of continuing and professional education at Virginia Tech.
- Radford University's College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences announced the following new faculty members: Aryn Bartley, assistant professor, department of English; Kevin Bowers, assistant professor, School of Communication; Tanya Corbin, assistant professor, department of political science; Joe Jones, chairman and professor, department of philosophy and religion; Taj Mahon-Haft, assistant professor, department of criminal justice; Gabriella Smith, instructor, department of sociology; Paul Thomas, assistant professor, department of philosophy and religious studies; Allison Wisecup, assistant professor, department of sociology; and Daniel Woods, assistant professor, department of English.
- Morris Cregger is the new chairman of the Roanoke College Board of Trustees.

- Timothy Heaphy, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, has been appointed to the advisory committee for U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

- Kristin Conrad of Carilion Clinic Obstetrics and Gynecology Blacksburg has been named 2011 Midwife of the Year by the Southwest Virginia Regional Midwives Group.
- Manly Aylor and Paul Kuhnel have been named board directors of Project Access of the Roanoke Valley.

- Bitsy Davis, manager of Long & Foster's Smith Mountain Lake office, has been named 2011 Realtor of the year by the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors.
