Retailer eyes Roanoke area for new store
Indiana-based retailer Hhgregg acknowledged Friday that it is considering locating a store in the Roanoke Valley but disclosed nothing else.
The publicly traded company, headquartered in Indianapolis, describes itself as a specialty retailer of consumer electronics, home appliances, mattresses and related services.
In an e-mail Friday evening, company spokesman Jason Chudoba wrote, "What I can confirm is that we are considering Roanoke as a destination for one of our stores. Other than that, I don't have any additional details."
On Wednesday, Hhgregg announced the opening of its first two stores in Virginia. Both are in Richmond and, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, both occupy former sites of Circuit City stores.
A Roanoke Circuit City store closed in March.
According to Hhgregg, it currently operates 128 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
In a quarterly report filed earlier this month, Hhgregg reiterated plans to open between 20 and 22 new stores in 2010 and an additional 40 to 45 in 2011.
Hhgregg's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange as HGG.
