Hooker Furniture recalls bed sets

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Hooker Furniture Corp. of Martinsville recently announced a voluntary recall of about 1,300 imported bunk beds sold to retailers by Hooker.

The beds, manufactured in Malaysia and Vietnam, pose a risk of strangulation for children because of gaps between parts of the upper bunk. The gap exceeds the federal bunk bed safety standard, according to the safety commission.

No injuries linked to the beds have been reported. Children should not use the bunk beds until modifications are made.

The beds were sold by Hooker Furniture retailers nationwide from August 2005 through August 2007 for about $1,000.

The recalled bunk beds come in twin-over-twin, twin-over-full and loft beds in the group names of Albany Park, Swedish Accents, Mariner's Landing and Chelsea's Place. Finishes include natural, cherry, white and black. Some of the bunk beds are also made of metal.

Consumers have been instructed to contact the retailer where they originally purchased the bunk bed to schedule a free, in-home repair.

Hooker Furniture reported that the affected bunk bed designs have been corrected for future shipments.

In November, Bassett Furniture Industries of Bassett announced the voluntary recall of about 8,900 cribs imported from China because the cribs posed a risk of entrapment and strangulation. Bassett Furniture also provided repair kits to eliminate the hazard.
