Area stocks hardly change
Despite a week of ups and downs for local stocks, the end result was notable for how little stock prices ended up changing.
Advance Auto Parts Inc. (AAP), for example, opened the week at $39.59 and, after five days of ups and downs, closed Friday at $39.62, a change of seven-hundredths of a percent.
Luna Innovations (LUNA) opened the week at $3.07, and got a jump Tuesday morning when it announced a $1.6 million contract with the Defense Department's Missile Defense Agency. By Wednesday afternoon, though, it had lost those gains and ended the week down a nickel at $3.02.
By 10 a.m. Monday, Norfolk Southern Corp. (NSC) had hit $54.10 after BB&T Capital Markets analysts reiterated their "buy" rating. It then rode up and down with the rest of the railroad sector, dropping to $51.20 Thursday morning and peaking at $54.51 Thursday afternoon. It ended the week at $53.81, a mere half a percent off that Monday morning number.
New River Pharmaceuticals (NRPH) opened Monday at $63.90 and closed Friday at $63.92. (Its stock has remained virtually unchanged since Shire plc of Great Britain made a $64-per-share offer on Feb. 20.)
Finally, Optical Cable Corp. (OCCF), which opened Monday at $5.09 and fluctuated to as low as $5.03, closed Friday at $5.18. That 1.8 percent gain was the biggest change among local companies.
